MICHIGAN Team Report
The offense is starting to show significant versatility after reeling off four straight Big Ten wins. While starting RB Mike Hart was once again on the bench as a result of his ankle injury -- he will be back for the Buckeyes game -- the Wolverines rushed for 216 yards and dictated the pace of the game with their consistency.
QB Chad Henne, who has not been as effective this year as he was as a freshman, threw three TD passes and completed 17-of-24 passes for 174 yards. He did not throw an interception.
Michigan got a huge lift from speedster Steve Breaston, who had 201 total yards vs. the Hoosiers. He is in top form after a slow start to the season.
"I kind of feel it like every time, it's always in the back of my mind that I'm kind of upset if I don't make a big play," said Breaston. "If the ball comes to me, I'll make plays."
Michigan should be as close to full strength all season when they host the Buckeyes this week. Hart will be back and he'll be joined by Kevin Grady and Jerome Jackson. WR Jason Avant and Breaston have enough talent to test the Buckeye secondary for 60 minutes.
The Michigan defense has played well all season -- and it will be in for its biggest test of the year when the Buckeyes come to Ann Arbor.
"It's a big game, it is Ohio State," said Michigan LB Dave Harris. "You come to Michigan for games like this, the Michigan and Ohio State tradition, Bo and Woody. We have a full week of practice and we have to practice hard. It will be a hard-hitting week of practice."
KEEP YOUR EYE ON: WR/RS Steve Breaston -- He outgained Indiana in the first half with his eight touches for 201 all-purpose yards. Offensively he had one rush attempt for 30 yards, three catches for 46 yards and an 11-yard touchdown reception. He also had one kickoff return for 47 yards and returned three punts for 78 yards.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Film study for Ohio State starts this week. We had to focus on Indiana first and then watch film on Ohio State, look at their tendencies as well. They have a great quarterback (Troy Smith) and he can run real well, they did it last year so we have to focus on stopping him along with Ted Ginn and Santonio Holmes. They are key players for their offense." -- NT Gabe Watson on preparing for Ohio State.
QB Chad Henne -- While he has not been as spectacular as he was a year ago, Henne has been steady during Michigan's four-game winning streak. He may be ready for the challenge of facing the Ohio State defense after completing 17-of-24 passes for 174 yards with three TDs and no interceptions.
LB Prescott Burgess -- He had four tackles and collected his first interception of the season.
NT Gabe Watson -- He plugged up the middle and prevented Indiana from establishing any kind of interior ground game. He also showed excellent penetration and registered two sacks.
STILL NEEDS WORK: The Wolverines are on a roll right now, but they face their biggest test of the season against Ohio State. The defense will be under tremendous pressure. That unit could not contain the Buckeyes' speed last year and gave up 37 points. Stopping elusive QB Troy Smith will be Michigan's top priority and containing ultrafast WRs Santonio Holmes and Ted Ginn Jr. are only slightly behind on its list of things to do.
TEs Kyle Ecker and Tim Massaquoi -- They combined for two catches and 11 yards against the Hoosiers. In order to beat a team like Ohio State, the Wolverines must use all of their weapons. Ecker and Massaquoi need to be more involved.
ROSTER REPORT: Running back Mike Hart (ankle) and center Adam Kraus (knee) did not play, though Lloyd Carr said they could have and admitted Hart lobbied him to play. ... Right tackle Jake Long, recovering from a major ankle injury, started the game but played little and Carr avoided discussing his absence after the game. ... Defensive end LaMarr Woodley (forearm) also played a few series early and sat the rest of the game. He said afterward he could have played more if necessary. ... Linebacker Chris Graham is a usual starter but played mostly in a reserve role Saturday. His hand and thumb were heavily wrapped.
