LOUISIANA TECH Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

Now that two games against the bottom of the WAC have been taken care of with a pair of road wins, Louisiana Tech steps out of conference -- and out of class -- this week with a visit to LSU.

Just what the Bulldogs need; a game against the Tigers, who are continuing their march back into the national championship picture.

After winning at winless Utah State the previous week, the Bulldogs scored 14 points in the fourth quarter for a 28-16 victory at 1-9 Idaho, the first time in two years the program has won back-to-back league road game. (The Dogs beat the same two teams in 2005).

Tech is now 4-5, 3-3 and in fourth place in the WAC. Derek Dooley's first year as head coach has already produced one more win than Jack Bicknell Jr.'s team amassed in getting Bicknell canned last season.

With a loss likely coming this week, along with a 4-6 record, the Bulldogs then finish their season with a home game against San Jose State and a trip to Nevada.

One gets the feeling that regardless of what happens from this point forward, though, Dooley is playing at least a bit with house money.

Zac Champion hit freshman Philip Rivas with a 70-yard touchdown pass to pull out the win in Moscow.

NOTES, QUOTES

--RB Daniel Porter didn't put up the big numbers in the win at Idaho, but he did have a 19-yard touchdown run for his sixth TD of the season. It was his third straight game scoring and his last five TDs have been from at least 14 yards out.

--QB Zac Champion had another solid game Nov. 3, going 16-for-25 for 227 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the win. This week, though, he has to face LSU.

GAME BALL GOES TO: RB Patrick Jackson -- He ran the ball 26 times for a career-high 155 yards and an insurance 8-yard TD run.

KEEP AN EYE ON: LSU -- This might not be a lot of fun for the Bulldogs next week. But the game will be used by Derek Dooley as another learning experience for his first-year program.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "A win is a win. Last week we made it look easy and this week we almost made it look impossible." -- Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley after his team escaped with a 28-16 win at Idaho on Nov. 3.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

LOOKING GOOD: The running game, again -- After producing a pair of 100-yard rushers in the 31-21 win at Utah State the previous week, the Bulldogs ran for 211 yards in the victory at Idaho.

The run defense -- The Bulldogs held Idaho to 67 yards rushing. "The defense did a great job defending the run, and that's what Idaho likes to do," said Tech coach Derek Dooley. "We forced them to throw the ball, and they don't do that as well."

S Dominique Faust -- He blocked his fourth kick of the season, a punt, tying a school record and giving him the national lead.

WR Philip Livas -- The freshman caught a 70-yard touchdown pass from Zac Champion to put his team ahead to stay. "Livas continues to make big plays for us, and that was the big play of the game for us," said Dooley.

STILL NEEDS WORK: This team -- Wins over two teams with one combined victory doesn't mean you've turned the corner, not all the way, anyway. Now, the Bulldogs have to face LSU.

Not sweating against bad teams -- The Nov. 3 game was closer than it should have been in Tech, down, 16-14, after three quarters, really wants to turn it around.

Pass blocking -- The Bulldogs ran well again, but Zac Champion was sacked twice.

ROSTER REPORT: DE Chris Pugh had only three tackles but delivered 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, two QB hits and a pass breakup.

K Danny Horwedel missed his only field-goal attempt of the day, a 33-yarder with 33 seconds left in the third quarter. He has 42 for his career, tops among active WAC kickers.

P Chris Keagle averaged 45.9 yards on his seven punts.
