OREGON STATE Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

There are some numbers Oregon State really can't like very much as it heads to Berkeley for an Oct. 13 game against California.

The biggest number, of course, is 2: The Bears are the No. 2 team in the country after all the craziness that's gone on the last three weeks.

But there are other numbers, especially turnover numbers.

The Beavers have committed more turnovers -- 23 -- than any team in the country, while Cal has produced 15. Oregon State is last in the Pac-10 in turnover margin -- minus-9 -- while Cal leads with a plus-11 mark.

Oregon State quarterback Sean Canfield has thrown 13 interceptions, the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Scary numbers.

There are more, which is why Cal comes into this game as heavy favorites, as the Beavers (3-3, 1-2 Pac-10) try to go over .500 with a second win in a row. Oregon State is looking for its first road win after two bad losses away from Corvallis.

Obviously, Stanford's amazing win, as 41-point underdogs, at USC last week is the latest fuel for the underdog in a season of upsets that started with Appalachian State beating then-No. 5 Michigan.

And, if this means anything, the Beavers have won the last three times they've played in Berkeley, taking six of the last eight games in the series.

"We are going down there expecting to win," said Oregon State coach Mike Riley, who hopes to see the next step as his team tries to duplicate last year's charge from a 2-3 start. "It's going to be hard. They are talented and well-coached. The whole team has athletic ability."

But in this crazy season, who knows?

NOTES, QUOTES

--OF Roy Schuening, a preseason third-team All-American in several publications, makes his team-leading 44th consecutive start when Oregon State visits No. 2 California this week.

--All-America candidate WR/PR Sammie Stroughter, out with a bruised kidney, will seek a medical redshirt in hopes of returning next season. He has played in three games after going through personal tragedy. "We are confident it will go through," Oregon State coach Mike Riley said.

SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: An offense with talent is last in the country with a whopping 23 turnovers, 13 of them off interceptions by Sean Canfield. He was benched for part of the second half last week but returned and will start again this week.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: The Oregon State defense continues to lead the Pac-10 and is No. 3 in the country in rushing yards per game (down to 43.3 yards per game), but the Beavers will be tested this week by Justin Forsett and his 5.4 yards per carry. Oregon State also has to deal with WR DeSean Jackson, one of the best players in the country. The Beavers lead the Pac-10 with 25 sacks, six more than No. 2 UCLA; they had eight last week for a total of 75 yards.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We have shown good capabilities, and it's time to prove it on the road." -- Oregon State coach Mike Riley, whose team is 0-2 on the road and has allowed 78 points in those games.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

THIS WEEK'S GAME: Oregon State at California, Oct. 13 -- The Beavers have won the last three times they visited Berkeley, but they didn't have to deal with the No. 2 team in the nation on any of those visits. Cal is favored by two touchdowns, but that's nothing when you consider Stanford was a 41-point underdog and beat USC last week.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Sean Canfield -- He was a bit better last week but still had to be pulled for part of the second half after tacking on two more interceptions to run his total to 13, the most in the country. The ability is there, but this won't be an easy week for him.

RB Yvenson Bernard -- He is averaging 107 yards per game and has run for 266 yards in the last two games. He is third in Oregon State history and 17th in the Pac-10 all-time with 3,290 yards on the ground.

DEs Norris Slade and Victor Butler -- They share the team lead with 5.5 sacks apiece in the first six games.

ROSTER REPORT: CB Keenan Lewis is expected to be out two to three weeks with a knee injury, the hope being he can return by Oct. 27. Tim Clark takes his place, with Gerard Lawson helping out.

OG Jeremy Perry (leg) also hopes to be back by Oct. 27.

S Daniel Drayton (groin) might play this week.

K/P Alexis Serna has made 123 consecutive extra points. The Pac-10 record is 139. His 66 field goals are school and league records. He is averaging just 32.9 yards per punt as he continues to deal with the dual role.
