BOWLING GREEN Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

Bowling Green did it again. Just when the Falcons looked ready to take a plunge in the Mid-American Conference East Division standings, they produced one of their best efforts of the season.

Bowling Green coach Greg Brandon has endured a topsy-turvy season with nearly 30 freshmen littered throughout the lineup, but Brandon's patience was rewarded with a 21-9 victory at Ohio on Saturday.

The Falcons (3-2, 2-1) knocked off the East-leading Bobcats (2-3, 1-1) by playing their best game of the season in all three phases of the game. It was Bowling Green's fifth straight MAC road victory dating to last season.

Inconsistency has plagued the Falcons throughout the season, with the quarterback position and special teams receiving most of the attention. Freshman quarterback/tailback Freddie Barnes continued his roller-coaster season with a strong performance against the Bobcats. Barnes has the capability to drive defensive coordinators crazy with his ability to run the football. Saturday, Barnes scored two rushing touchdowns to raise his season total to eight.

"It was huge for the team to go out and play hard on all cylinders," Barnes said. "It was real big for us. We are just taking the necessary steps to get back to where we want to be."

Sophomore Anthony Turner returned after a one-game absence due to a shoulder injury. Turner completed nine passes and brought stability to a shaky offense. Tailback Chris Bullock gives the BGSU offense an additional weapon, rushing for 114 yards on Saturday. Bullock received his first extended action the previous week, gaining 99 yards.

The BGSU defense answered Brandon's plea for added toughness, recording a season-high four sacks and nine tackles for losses.

NOTES, QUOTES

GAME BALL GOES TO: DE Diyral Briggs -- Helping the Falcons hold Ohio to nine points with relentless pressure. Briggs spent most of the game in Ohio backfield, recording a career-high two sacks. Briggs also forced a fumble that was recovered by teammate Antonio Smith.

KEEP AN EYE ON: TB Chris Bullock -- The freshman set a new career-high for rushing yards for the second straight week. Last week Bullock ran for 99 yards. Saturday, Bullock rushed for 114 yards.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We ran so much offense today it was unbelievable. It's like a pro offense the things we do." -- BGSU coach Gregg Brandon
