LSU Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

LSU came away with a 31-3 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, but there is the feeling that the Tigers have a lot of work to do heading into three consecutive SEC games.

"We have the ability to make plays, but we're not hitting on all cylinders just yet, and we must run the football," coach Les Miles said after the Tigers improved to 3-0. "We have too many good runners to not run the football more efficiently, so that's our quest."

LSU ran for 164 yards against the Cajuns, but senior Charles Scott led with only 63. Senior Keiland Williams also had his moments but finished with just 43 yards.

"Workmanlike" was the word most used to describe the win.

"I hope that we can keep saying afterward that we're better with each game that we play," Miles said. "I think we did not throw the football efficiently. I don't think we ran the football efficiently.

"I think we made big plays. ... I like the position we're in. It's just we haven't done it yet. I see what you guys see. I want us to be better. We have struggled where maybe we shouldn't."

The biggest play all night came on the defensive end. With the visitors in a first-and-goal situation at LSU's 3-yard line, the Tigers held the Cajuns out of the end zone to preserve a 24-3 lead. The Cajuns had three shots from a yard out and couldn't convert.

"The goal is to not let them score at all," senior linebacker Jacob Cutrera said. "We just tried to do our job and get ULL's offense off the field."

The Tigers are on the road for the next two games, starting with a trip to Mississippi State. They are at Georgia after that before returning home to play Florida on Oct. 10.

NOTES, QUOTES

--RB Trindon Holliday was honored on the field between the first and second quarters for winning the 100-meter dash in the NCAA Outdoor Championships earlier this year. On his first play after that, he scooted around end to score on an 11-yard run. Holliday ran the 100 meters last spring in 10.0 seconds.

--WR Brandon LaFell extended his streak of games with at least one reception to 31. He had three catches for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

--QB Jordan Jefferson threw his first interception of the year in the first quarter. That ended his streak of pass attempts without a pick at 100.

GAME BALL GOES TO: WR Terrance Tolliver -- The junior set a career high in leading the Tigers with six receptions for 68 yards. He is second on the team in receptions with 13 -- one behind Brandon LaFell -- but leads in receiving yardage with 206 to LaFell's 129.

KEEP AN EYE ON: WR Reuben Randle -- A true freshman, Randle registered his first career reception with a 15-yard catch early in the fourth quarter.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's a really good feeling having all of those guys around me. I know those guys are going to get the yards and catch the ball for me. I'm going to keep feeding them the ball, and they're going to keep doing good things with it." -- QB Jordan Jefferson, on the playmakers who surround him in LSU's offense.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

LOOKING GOOD: LSU's defense kept the Cajuns out of the end zone with a goal-line stand in the third quarter and came up with three turnovers. The Cajuns managed only 272 yards after averaging 410 in their first two games.

--PK Josh Jasper remained perfect on the season in six attempts with a 52-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to extend LSU's lead to 17-3.

STILL NEEDS WORK: Though the Tigers ran for 164 yards, they were inconsistent at times. RB Charles Scott, who ran for 1,174 yards last year, has yet to have a 100-yard game this season.

--QB Jordan Jefferson was 16-of-25 passing but threw his first interception of the year. His completions were good for a so-so 166 yards. He had only two completions of 20 yards or more, both to WR Brandon LaFell (20 and 21).

ROSTER REPORT:

--TE Richard Dickson took a hard hit in the first quarter and missed the rest of the game with what was called a mild concussion. Before leaving, however, he had three catches to raise his career total to 75, tied for third with Robert Royal in the LSU record book for career receptions by a tight end.

--DT Joseph Barksdale left the game with an undisclosed injury near the end of the first half but played in the second half.

--WR Tim Molton, who was slated for rehab this season after injuring his knee in summer workouts, has enrolled at Louisiana Tech, Bulldogs coach Derek Dooley announced. Molton redshirted last year for the Tigers. He will have three years of eligibility at Tech starting in 2010.
