MICHIGAN Team Report
The Wolverines have reeled off a 20-0 record in games against opponents from the Mid-American Conference and have outscored them 707-145. Michigan's latest MAC laugher came against Eastern Michigan as the Wolverines recorded a 55-0 win.
That victory came on the heels of a painful loss to Notre Dame and head coach Lloyd Carr wanted to see his team get back on track. In particular, he wanted QB Chad Henne to get moving. Henne completed just 19-of-44 passes against the Fighting Irish and suffered his first poor game in a Michigan uniform.
Henne & Co. had no problems against the Eagles. They were quicker, faster and more powerful from the opening kickoff and dominated from start to finish. Henne completed 13-of-19 passes for 147 yards with three TD passes before he gave way to backup Matt Gutierrez.
Steve Breaston is expected to be a consistent big-play producer and he caught two passes for 20 yards against Eastern Michigan. However, he showed his breakaway ability with a 72-yard punt return in the first quarter that set up a Max Martin TD run. Breaston evaded tacklers after picking up the bouncing ball deep in his own territory and then demonstrated his speed while cutting right through the heart of the Eastern Michigan special teams.
Jason Avant made a huge contribution by catching two TD passes from Henne. Avant caught eight passes for 93 yards and played the way a No. 1 receiver is supposed to play.
Since Mike Hart was sidelined with a hip injury, Carr turned to Martin for the bulk of the running game. Martin ran for 117 yards on 26 carries and scored the first two TDs over the game.
Overall, the Wolverines responded with an utterly predictable performance vs. an overmatched opponent. However, they go on the road for the first time this year against Wisconsin and the Badgers have a formidable running game with transfer Brian Calhoun. That should be a significant challenge for the Wolverines' defense.
KEEP AN EYE ON: WR-Special teamer Steve Breaston -- Though he has not been explosive as a receiver to this point in the year, Breaston demonstrated his breakaway ability with a 72-yard punt return in the first quarter. He is smart, fast and decisive when returning punts.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Going through last week and not playing like that ever before, you've just pretty much got to ignore it and move on. You just have to be more prepared than last week." -- QB Chad Henne on bouncing back after a less-than-stellar effort in the loss to Notre Dame.
-- QB Chad Henne came back from his first bad game in a Michigan uniform and completed 13-of-19 passes for 147 yards with three TDs and no interceptions. Backup Matt Gutierrez looked sharp in completing 7-of-9 passes in relief.
-- FB Brian Thompson is one of those unsung players who does the little things to keep the team on top. He caught a six-yard scoring pass in the second quarter for the first touchdown of his career.
STILL NEEDS SOME WORK: The Wolverines did everything they wanted to against Eastern Michigan, but now they must play a solid defensive game against the powerful running attack of Wisconsin. That is a far more difficult assignment.
--The Wolverines averaged just a tad more than four yards per carry against Eastern Michigan. While they were not challenged at all, that's not overly impressive.
CB Leon Hall returned two punts for 16 yards and had one tackle. It's a minor nitpick, but Hall did not play at the level of some of his teammates.
ROSTER REPORT: Offensive linemen Adam Stenavich (back) and Rueben Riley (left hand/thumb) suffered injuries but should play next weekend. ... Mike Hart (left hip injury), defensive lineman Jeremy Van Alstyne (undisclosed) and wide receiver Doug Dutch (undisclosed) did not play.
