BOWLING GREEN Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

Finally, in the third week of the season, Bowling Green pieced together a solid effort in every phase of the game.

The Falcons moved the ball behind the running of Anthony Turner and Freddie Barnes, picked off three passes and played better on special teams in defeating Florida International 33-28.

The erratic play of the special teams has been a sore spot for the Falcons in their first two games. With a freshman punter (Alonso Rojas) and kicker (Sean Ellis), the Falcons have made costly mistakes in the kicking game.

Thus far, the special-teams coverage allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown and had not blocked well on field-goal attempts and punts. This week, Bowling Green did allow another long touchdown on a kickoff return, but Rojas had several long punts and Ellis converted both of his field goals.

"We made some big plays in the kicking game," said BGSU coach Gregg Brandon. "It was great to see Alonso Rojas boom a couple and it was nice to see Sean Ellis make a couple of field goals. You can see they have talent, they just need to gain confidence and consistency."

The Falcons, who listed 27 freshmen on last week's two-deep roster, have gotten off to a surprising start at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference. The BGSU offense, led by quarterbacks Turner and Barnes, is an area of strength.

The combination of Turner and Barnes together on the same field is causing havoc for opponents, with Barnes throwing for a touchdown and catching a TD on Saturday. Barnes, who started the opener against Wisconsin at quarterback, has averaged two touchdowns a game this year. However, Turner left the game in the third quarter with a shoulder injury.

NOTES, QUOTES

GAME BALL GOES TO: QB/RB Freddie Barnes -- One of the best freshmen in the country, Barnes light up Florida International with his running, passing and catching. Barnes rushed for a team-best 70 yards, hauled in a three-yard touchdown catch and completed 6-of-12 passes for 57 yards.

KEEP AN EYE ON: QB Anthony Turner -- In his second straight start, Turner completed 12-of-22 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown. The versatile sophomore was a dual-threat, torching Florida International for 59 yards rushing in just three quarters.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Freddie Barnes is a competitor and Anthony Turner is a warrior. Both of those guys demonstrated we can win with them. They both make plays and more importantly, they made them in the clutch." --Bowling Green coach Gregg Brandon on the play of his quarterbacks
