INSIDE SLANT
The Ragin' Cajuns (2-0) are the only unbeaten team in the Sun Belt, but they play at LSU Saturday.
ULL is coming off a very impressive home win, 17-15, over Kansas State.
"We had a talk before the season started about handling the ups and downs of a season and what you go through," ULL coach Rickey Bustle said. "This is where our football team is right now.
"We need to handle this situation and put this game behind us and move on. We can't let this go for naught."
Considering ULL is 0-21 against LSU, moving on shouldn't be a problem.
ULL's defense will face its stiffest test of the season at LSU, as will an offense that features new starters at quarterback (Chris Masson), tailback (Undrea Sails) and receiver.
Although the Ragin' Cajuns will be a huge underdog this week, last week's victory was certainly a confidence builder for a program trying to reach the upper echelon of the Sun Belt.
NOTES, QUOTES--Senior RB Undrea Sails, a first-year starter, has gained 189 yards rushing in the first two games.
--Junior QB Chris Masson, also a first-year starter, has completed 63 percent of his passes. He has thrown for 468 yards and three touchdowns, and just one interception.
SERIES HISTORY: LSU 21, ULL 0 (last meeting, 2006, 45-3, LSU)
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: The Ragin' Cajuns weren't prolific offensively against Kansas State, but they were effective and took advantage of their scoring opportunities. ULL has done a good job mixing up the run and pass, averaging more than 150 yards passing and more than 250 on the ground. More important, ULL is 6-of-6 in the red zone.
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: ULL's defense dominated Kansas State and is allowing just 17.5 points a game. Expected to be a strength this season, the Ragin' Cajun defense has lived up to its billing. ULL has four interceptions and five takeaways in two games.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "You don't get to celebrate the victories very long, and you don't mull over the losses, either. You've got to carry it throughout the season. We can't let this be the highlight of the season." -- ULL coach Rickey Bustle, whose team upset Kansas State 17-15 last week.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNELTHIS WEEK'S GAME: ULL at LSU, Sept. 19 -- The Ragin' Cajuns are 0-21 in games against the Tigers. ULL will be a big underdog, yet it still has a lot of confidence after winning its first two games.
KEY'S TO THE GAME: ULL needs to establish a running game and protect quarterback Chris Masson. The defense has played outstanding the first two games, but faces its toughest test at LSU.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
LB Antwyne Zanders -- The senior already has a team-leading 24 tackles in two games.
DB Maurice Rolle -- The junior has a team-high two interceptions.
QB Chris Masson -- The junior and first-year starter has a team-high 521 yards of total offense. He has thrown for three touchdowns and rushed for another.
ROSTER REPORT:
--Senior DB Gerren Blount did not play last week, due to "a personal issue," according to coach Rickey Bustle. He is expected to play against LSU Saturday.
--Senior LB Antwyne Zanders was named the Sun Conference defensive player of the week after recording 15 tackles against Kansas State.
--Junior PK Tyler Albrecht was named the Special Teams Player of the Week. His 48-yard field goal with 32 seconds left gave ULL the 17-15 win over Kansas State, and it was his first career attempt.
