LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

Drew Edmiston is an afterthought now.

The former all-conference kicker left big shoes to fill when he graduated last year.

Junior Tyler Albrecht had a good battle in fall camp with Brett Baer before winning the job.

He then cemented his place in ULL history last Saturday by booting a 48-yard field goal with 32 seconds left to give the Ragin' Cajuns a thrilling 17-15 victory over Big 12 foe Kansas State.

"I gave him a kiss after the game," ULL defensive end Chris Lanaux told the Lafayette Daily Advertiser. "And I wasn't afraid to do it."

It was a huge win for ULL, as well as the Sun Belt Conference as it tries to gain more respect.

The Ragin' Cajun defensive, expected to be a strength this season, played outstanding and held the high-power Wildcats, who beat ULL 45-37 last year, at bay.

"This is where our football team probably hasn't ever been," ULL coach Rickey Bustle told the Daily Advertiser. "We were down in a close game, able to keep it close and found a way to win."

SEASON RECAP: ULL 42, Southern 19 -- Sophomore quarterback Chris Masson threw for 283 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 36 and a TD. ULL trailed 12-7 before scoring 35 unanswered points.

ULL 17, Kansas State 15 -- Junior kicker Tyler Albrecht's 48-yard field goal with 32 seconds remaining to give the Ragin Cajuns the victory. ULL led 14-2 at halftime before giving up 13 unanswered points in the final period and needing the come-from-behind victory.

NOTES, QUOTES

--Since 2002, UL-Lafayette has ranked third in the nation, along with last week's opponent, for most blocked kicks (36).

--A week after drawing more than 41,000 fans for Southern, which set a new school record, ULL had just 16,341 for Kansas State last week.

--ULL's 17-15 victory over Kansas State last week was its first over a BCS school since beating Texas A&M at home in 1996.

GAME BALL GOES TO: Junior PK Tyler Albrecht -- The junior's 48-yard field goal with 32 seconds left gave ULL a 17-15 upset victory over Kansas State at home last week.

KEEP AN EYE ON: WR Marlin Miller -- The junior had a career-high six receptions for 47 yards against Kansas State.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I was a little sore, but I played through the pain because I knew my team needed me. So I just tried to suck it up, compete and go out there and play." -- ULL senior RB Undrea Sails told the Lafayette Daily Advertiser, referring to playing against Kansas State with a knee injury.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

LOOKING GOOD: RB Undrea Sails -- A week after rushing for more than 100 yards in his first career start, the senior gained 78 yards and scored a touchdown while playing with a collarbone injury.

LB Antwyne Zanders -- The senior was all over the field against Kansas State, leading the Ragin' Cajuns with 15 tackles.

ULL's defense held Kansas State to just 3-of-16 on third-down conversions.

STILL NEEDS WORK: ULL had a bad snap go out of the end zone, resulting in a safety against Kansas State.

The Ragin' Cajuns had three turnovers against Kansas State.

ULL is a good rushing football team, yet had just 102 yards against Kansas State.
