BOWLING GREEN Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

Several Falcons get a rare in-season chance to return to their home state this week. Bowling Green, with seven players hailing from Florida, heads to Florida International.

"It will be a fun trip," said BGSU coach Gregg Brandon. "It's a great opportunity to play in a great football area."

The Falcons lost nearly all of their skill players on offense from last year's team, but the offense has been able to move the ball and score points. The Falcons lead the Mid-American Conference in rushing (287.5 yards per game) and rank second in scoring (31.0).

Last week, the Falcons scored 48 points and stymied Buffalo with a two-quarterback system. Quarterback Anthony Turner and Freddie Barnes have brought life to the offense with their running. Turner opened up the passing game with a strong outing last week.

The Falcons must shore up their problems on special teams. They gave up a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and missed two extra point attempts, and one of their punts was blocked.

"We're spending a lot of time on the kicking game now; we're just not doing a good job coaching it right now. We've got to do better," Brandon said.

NOTES, QUOTES

:

SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: This is another good test for the young Bowling Green offense. Last week, BGSU coach Gregg Brandon rotated Anthony Turner and Freddie Barnes at quarterback. That won't change this week. The pair presents problems for opponents, with Barnes' ability to make tacklers miss and Turner's combination of size and speed. The Falcons rank second in scoring (31.0) and first in rushing (287.5) and total offense (435.5) in the Mid-American Conference.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: The defense will be tested against Florida International. The Golden Panthers have plenty of speed and relish the opportunity to knock off a Mid-American Conference team. The return of LB Albert White helped the defense last week. LB Enrique Davis tops the conference in tackles.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Anthony is a strong runner and breaks tackles whereas Freddie makes a move and makes you miss. Both give us a couple of extra tailbacks, which we're really having fun (with)." -- Bowling Green coach Gregg Brandon on QBs Anthony Turner and Freddie Barnes

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

THIS WEEK'S GAME: Bowling Green at Florida International, Sept. 16. Since becoming a Division I-A member in 2004, Florida International has been steadily building a program. The Golden Panthers need a program-building win after losing their last two games by one point each. Meanwhile, the youthful Falcons are getting more confident each week.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: LB Albert White -- Coming off a one-game suspension, the fifth-year senior recorded 18 tackles last week.

QB Anthony Turner -- He posted big numbers running (127 yards) and passing (204 yards) last week in his season debut.

OL Derrick Markray -- A fifth-year senior, Markray's a key reason for BGSU's big rushing games.

ROSTER REPORT: Wide receiver Corey Partridge (knee) should be able to play this game.

PK Sean Ellis (hip flexor) is questionable.
