IOWA Team Report
The bad news was the Hawkeyes made mistake after mistake and generally played sloppy football while the Cyclones were inspired and sharp. Head coach Kirk Ferentz has to be very disappointed with a team that turned the ball over five times in a key game -- especially when it comes to the in-state recruiting battle.
The good news is that QB Drew Tate should be fine. Tate went out of the game after taking a head shot early in the second quarter and backup Jason Manson was forced into the game. Tate suffered a concussion and appeared to be woozy as he was escorted into the locker room later in the half.
Ferentz said he expected Tate to be fine and that he should be in the lineup for this week's game vs. Northern Iowa. Manson was under pressure throughout the game and was not able to follow up with a solid performance after going 9-of-9 vs. Ball State in the opening week of the season. Manson was 10-of-31 for 117 yards.
There were a number of lowlights for the Hawkeyes. They were held without a TD by the Cyclones for the first time since 1978. The 3-point total was their lowest at Iowa State since 1910 when they beat the Cyclones, 2-0.
Turnovers were the biggest problem since the Hawkeyes moved the ball fairly well. The running game had its second straight good game as Iowa picked up 173 yards on 32 attempts. Albert Young was particularly effective with 18 carries for 140 yards.
If Tate makes a quick recovery and the Hawkeyes can regain their composure and hold on to the ball, they should be able to get back on track vs. Northern Iowa this week.
KEEP AN EYE ON: WR Scott Chandler -- On a day when the passing game struggled, Chandler attempted to step up with seven catches for 72 yards. Chandler showed courage and good hands. He should be a viable target this season for Drew Tate.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I don't think we did anything with ease, and you've got to give Iowa State the credit there. They took us out of our comfort zone real fast, and we were extremely fortunate to be down 16-0 with four turnovers in the first half." -- Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz after his team lost at Iowa State 23-3.
-- LBs Abdul Hodge and Chad Greenway -- The outstanding LB duo combined for 26 tackles against Iowa State. They are superior players who bring it every week.
-- DE Mike Follett -- He stepped up with five tackles and two sacks. While Iowa State able to take advantage of turnovers to build a 16-0 halftime lead, the Hawkeye defense hung in there and gave up just 318 yards.
STILL NEEDS SOME WORK: The Hawkeyes came up with a clunker against a fired-up opponent. While one may question why the Hawkeyes did not play with the same emotion as the Cyclones, Kirk Ferentz excels at getting his team to bounce back. His team needs to hold on to the football better since they turned it over five times against Iowa State.
-- QB Jason Manson looked brilliant vs. Ball State the previous week, but struggled with a 10-of-31 performance against Iowa State. He looked overwhelmed and struggled against a fired-up defense.
-- WR Ed Hinkel is the most dependable receiver on the Hawkeyes, but he caught just two passes vs. the Cyclones. Look for a bounce-back game vs. Northern Iowa.
ROSTER REPORT: Ferentz said QB Drew Tate should be good to go when the Hawkeyes line up against Northern Iowa this week despite a concussion suffered against Iowa State. ... CB Antwan Allen was back in the starting lineup after being suspended for the opener. Allen had six tackles.
