MICHIGAN STATE Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

It's a painful memory for the Spartans.

Turn the clock back to the last regular-season game of the year. Michigan State traveled to Hawaii to take on the Warriors. A win over June Jones' team would have meant a .500 regular season and a likely bowl berth.

The Spartans were expected to go out and win the game, but Hawaii was more motivated and found a way to get the home win. The Spartans were left to limp home after losing 41-38.

The bad blood lingers to the point the two teams are spending the week before the game accusing one another of refusing to provide the other with game film.

"We're not sending tapes. They're not sending tapes. It's that simple," coach John L. Smith told reporters.

Not only were the Spartans razor sharp in their season-opening 49-14 win over Kent State, Hawaii is coming off a humiliating 63-17 loss to USC in the opener. Hawaii no longer has Timmy Chang at quarterback or Chad Owens at the WR spot, and the long road trip is bound to make things difficult for them.

Passing, however, remains Hawaii's strength, and Smith will need his defensive line to rush the passer. "I don't even know if we recorded a sack against (Chang)," Smith said.

They now rotate two players at quarterback -- traditional passer Colt Brennan and option quarterback Tyler Graunke.

Offensively, it will be up to QB Drew Stanton and RB Jehuu Caulcrick to continue what they did against Kent State. Stanton is very active and mobile and he is a very accurate passer. He completed 22-of-29 attempts against the Golden Flashes and should find plenty of open receivers against the generous Hawaii defense. Caulcrick is a wrecking ball of a running back who ran for 140 yards against Kent State.

NOTES, QUOTES

SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: Michigan State rolled for 685 yards and 49 points against Kent State. The yardage total was the second-highest in Spartans history. They could challenge the record book against Hawaii, a team that was absolutely shredded for 63 points and 518 yards by USC. Look for Drew Stanton to have another field day.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: This group should be very motivated after last year's season-ending loss at Hawaii. Michigan State has a bunch of hard hitters, but are they fast enough to stop outstanding opponents as the season progresses?

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's not so much the revenge factor. Yes, we lost, yes it left a horrible taste in our mouths at the end of the season. It may have a little extra incentive to it, but it's just the next game on our schedule." -- OLG Kyle Cook on whether the Spartans were looking for revenge after losing at Hawaii in the final game of the 2004 season.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

THIS WEEK'S GAME: vs. Hawaii, Sept. 10 -- The mindset of these teams are completely opposite each. The Spartans were overwhelming and overpowering in their season-opening win over Kent State, while the Warriors got destroyed 63-17 by USC in their opener. Michigan State is looking to go 2-0 and avenge last year's season-ending defeat at Hawaii.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Drew Stanton -- While he will get some argument from Drew Tate of Iowa, and Chad Henne of Michigan, Stanton could be the best quarterback in the Big Ten. A great combination of athleticism and passing accuracy.

OLB Eric Smith -- He had a big game against Kent State with six tackles, an interception and a pass defensed.

FB Jehuu Caulcrick -- A punishing runner who picked up 140 yards and scored three TDs in the opener. Caulcrick has decent speed for a man so large (245 pounds) once he gets to the second level.

WR Kyle Brown -- He started the season well with six catches for 61 yards and a TD in the opener. He has good size (6-1 and 207) and understands the nuances of getting open.

ROSTER REPORT: Head coach John L. Smith said backup LB Rob Tabatchnick and running back Jason Teague were "banged up" after the Kent State game but should be fine for Saturday's contest. Backup defensive tackle Brandon McKinney's sore ankle is healing and he should be able to play as well.
