BOWLING GREEN Team Report
Stadium.
The Falcons (0-1) scored on their first possession to seize a 7-0 lead. Redshirt freshman quarterback Freddie Barnes had an impressive debut,
rushing for 158 yards on 29 attempts -- a school record for a quarterback.
The dilemma facing BGSU coach Gregg Brandon now is: Who starts at quarterback on Saturday against Buffalo?
Sophomore Anthony Turner earned valuable experience behind Omar Jacobs last year. Turner’s one-game suspension opened the door for Barnes to start last
week. Barnes earned Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
Getting Barnes on the field for Saturday’s home game with Buffalo is a definitely in the plans.
“Freddie will play in the game ... some quarterback, running back and wide receiver,” Brandon said. “We will have a plan for both him and Anthony Turner in
the game.”
The Bulls started the Turner Gill era with a victory over Temple, but own just one conference road win since 1999.
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: The return of senior LB Terrel White will help the Falcons. White missed last week’s game because of a one-game suspension. The Falcons had trouble stopping the run against Wisconsin, but allowed only 319 yards of total offense.
QUOTE TO NOTE: “Anthony is more established in the passing game. We can probably do more things throwing the football with Anthony. Both are exciting runners, the type we like in our system. It will be fun to have both on the football field together.” --Bowling Green State coach Gregg Brandon on utilizing both of his quarterbacks, Anthony Turner and Freddie Barnes, at the same time.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Anthony Turner -- Sitting out the opener while serving a one-game suspension, Turner most likely will take over the starting quarterback duties. The Falcons were a one-dimensional team against Wisconsin. Turner should help improve the passing numbers.
QB Freddie Barnes -- Showing he belonged on the field, Barnes has eye-catching running ability and might play three different positions this week.
LB Terrel White -- As a senior, White must come back strong after missing the opener due to a one-game suspension. The Falcons need White’s experience on defense.
ROSTER REPORT: The Falcons will find a spot for Barnes, but it might not be quarterback. QB Anthony Turner sat out last week because of a one-game suspension. Bowling Green State coach Gregg Brandon can’t keep Barnes off the field, and promised he will play him at tailback, wide receiver and maybe quarterback.
--Senior LB Terrel White returns after a one-game suspension.
--Sophomore CB Antonio Smith’s status (ankle) is uncertain.
--Special-teams player Nate Waldron is questionable for Saturday’s game (back).
