GETTING INSIDE

Coach Gregg Marshall's Eagles won 12 of their first 16 games and started 2-0 in the Big South. That's not surprising, but there is a qualifier.

Marshall has yet to have his entire team healthy, which is a scary consideration for the rest of the league.

Freshman Rainer Blickle, an excellent shooter, was scheduled to get some heavy playing time until suffering a foot injury in preseason and going on the redshirt list. Center Craig Bradshaw suffered a leg injury and missed two games. Forward Taj McCullough sat two games with a shoulder injury. And point guard Chris Gaynor missed two with a toe sprain.

And now preseason Big South player of the year Torrell Martin is out with a foot sprain. He missed the Charleston Southern game and could be out a couple of weeks.

With Martin out, junior college transfer Antwon Harris, redshirt freshman Mantoris Robinson and McCullough stepped up.

Marshall is wondering what will happen if and when everyone's healthy.

Charleston Southern coach Barclay Radebaugh, whose team lost to the Eagles by 23 with Martin sitting out, said it's the best Winthrop team he's seen and the best defensive team his club has faced.

NOTES, QUOTES

-- The 108 points scored against VMI where the most for a Marshall coached team. But more importantly to the Eagles, they held the Keydets, who were averaging 102, to 76. That's two points less than the most a Marshall coached team has allowed in a Big South game.

-- One reason the 71-51 loss to Texas A&M wasn't quite so painful was the $85,000 guarantee the Eagles got for going to College Station.

Before losing at Texas A&M, the Eagles had climbed to No. 3 in the mid-major top 25, the team's highest ranking ever.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're just glad to get out of here with a win." -- Coach Gregg Marshall, after the road win at Charleston.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Coach Gregg Marshall has been willing to use some different combinations this season, including playing PGs Chris Gaynor, Kyle Moore and De'Andre Adams at the same time. Marshall will move Gaynor to shooting guard to rest Michael Jenkins and Torrell Martin.

PLAYER ROTATION: Usual Starters -- F Phillip Williams, F Torrell Martin, C Craig Bradshaw, G Michael Jenkins, G Chris Gaynor; Key Subs -- G De'Andre Adams, F Taj McCullough, F Mantoris Robinson, F Antwon Harris

GAME REVIEW:

Texas A&M 71, Winthrop 51

Winthrop 108, VMI 76

Winthrop 75, Charleston Southern 52

GAME PREVIEW:

at Liberty, Jan. 13

vs. UNC Asheville, Jan. 15

at Radford, Jan. 20

KEYS: Having played a difficult nonconference schedule, the Eagles should be prepared for most anything. But they have to continue to remember that in the Big South nothing is guaranteed except the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament that goes with winning the league tournament.

ROSTER REPORT:

Jason Killeen, the 6-10 sophomore who broke his wrist the first week of December, has not practiced since, but is expected back in the next couple of weeks. The Eagles could use his big body and five fouls to five.

When Antwon Harris was a day late coming back from Christmas break because he missed his ride, he paid the price with some extensive running before and after practices. He didn't play the next game at ODU, but respondced with a decent effort at A&M and a career-high 22 points against VMI.

Torrell Martin, with his 15-point game in the win at Old Dominion, moved into 10th place on the school's all-time scoring list (1,220). He needs 26 points to move into ninth and could, if he gets healthy quickly reach the top five before the end of the year.
