MICHIGAN Team Report
The result was a painful 38-37 loss to the Longhorns.
The first-ever meeting between these two football powerhouses turned out to be a high-scoring classic. While Young ran through the Wolverines for 192 yards and four touchdowns, Michigan QB Chad Henne was no slouch either. Henne completed 18-of-34 passes for 227 yards and four touchdowns. Three of those scoring passes went to Braylon Edwards and the other went to lightning-quick Steve Breaston.
The Michigan offensive line did a spectacular job of giving Henne time to find his receivers and he was able to step up and throw lasers. Michigan had a 31-21 lead in the fourth quarter, but just could not stop the relentless Young as the game reached its final stages.
"When it's a quarterback like that, it's kind of hard to stop him," linebacker LaMarr Woodley told the Detroit Free Press.
"All you can do is contain him, and I think we did a pretty good job containing him, for the most part. It was just that, once the quarterback is sitting back there so long, lanes started opening up. And once he took those lanes, he ran. We had him, but we didn't wrap him up and finish him off."
On the final drive, Young led the Longhorns to the Michigan 20. That set up Dusty Mangum up for a game-winning 37-yard attempt. He came through on the final play of the game, and Texas had a win in its first-ever Rose Bowl appearance.
Breaston set a Rose Bowl record with 315 total yards, breaking O.J. Simpson's mark of 276 yards. Breaston returned six kickoffs for 221 yards and also caught a 50-yard TD pass in the third quarter.
Edwards finished his spectacular career with 39 TD receptions -- breaking Anthony Carter's previous Michigan record of 37. Despite the 10-catch, 109-yard performance against Texas, Edwards was upset by the loss.
"All I can think about is this loss," Edwards told the Detroit Free Press. "I wanted to go out with a victory for my team, wanted to give the young guys a great experience that they could cherish. It didn't happen that way.
"I can't think about those records right now. They're a beautiful thing to have. I'm glad that I'm in this situation, that my name will be amongst many great men, but I can't think about that right now."
GAME OF THE YEAR: Michigan 35, Michigan State 27 (Oct. 30) -- The Wolverines needed a miracle fourth-quarter rally to tie the game and send it into overtime. Braylon Edwards caught two fourth-quarter TD passes to tie it up and also added a third in the extra session.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: QB Chad Henne -- In addition to tying a Rose Bowl record with four TD passes, Henne showed himself to be a spectacular leader by starting as a true freshman. He stepped in at the start of the season when Matt Gutierrez and completed 240-of-399 passes for 2,743 yards with 25 TDs and 12 interceptions.
RAPID REVIEW: The Wolverines took one on the chin in the second game of the season when they dropped a 28-20 decision to Notre Dame. Following that game, Michigan reeled off eight straight wins prior to dropping their regular-season finale to archrival Ohio State. After playing spectacular defense for much of the season, the Wolverine run defense fell apart in the final four games of the season. Vince Young torched Michigan for 192 yards in the Rose Bowl.
FAST FORWARD: Despite their late-season defensive problems, Michigan should be one of the most powerful teams in the country next year. Led by Henne, RB Mike Hart and WR Steve Breaston, they should be balanced and explosive. "Look out for Michigan," said Texas coach Mack Brown.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's very frustrating, but at the same time that's part of the game. It's a team game. It's not just offense and special teams. It takes all three parts of the game. We just didn't find a way to win, that's the bottom line." -- TE Tim Massaquoi, on the 38-37 loss to Texas in the Rose Bowl.
RB Mike Hart -- The freshman ran for 1,455 yards and nine touchdowns and gave the Wolverines a powerful running game. By the end of the season, he was the most productive running back in the Big Ten.
ROSTER REPORT: Linebacker Prescott Burgess claimed his first career interception in the Rose Bowl and returned the ball 23 yards into Texas territory. ... LB LaMarr Woodley was named the Rose Bowl Defensive Player of the Game. Woodley led the defense with 11 tackles and four tackles for loss. ... Cornerback Marlin Jackson registered a career-high nine tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass breakup in his final career game.
