Nine Stanford Women's Water Polo Student-Athletes Earn All-American Academic Award From ACWPC

Stanford's 3.34 team GPA also fourth among listed teams

STANFORD, Calif. - Nine members of the Stanford Women's Water Polo team were recognized by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Tuesday, earning All-American Academic Awards for their achievements in the classroom.

Four team members achieved the highest honor given by the ACWPC, classified as "Outstanding." Junior driver Heather West led the quartet with a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average, and was joined by freshmen drivers Jenna Gunderson (3.76) and Kim Krueger (3.71), along with redshirt junior driver Megan May (3.72).

Senior driver/two-meter Jacquelyn Gauthier, a second-team All-American for her performance in the pool during the 2008 season, was among four Cardinal student-athletes to earn "Superior" honors. Gauthier, who boasts a 3.56 cumulative grade-point average, was joined by junior drivers Koree Blyleven (3.54) and Kira Hillman (3.54), and freshman goalkeeper Kim Hall (3.46).

Chelsea Smith-Carmichael rounded out the Stanford selections by earning "Excellent" recognition with her 3.25 GPA.

In the pool, Stanford finished the year with a 27-5 mark and third-place finish at the 2008 National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championship. The team also boasted an 11-1 mark in MPSF play, good for second place in the conference.
