Stanford advances with a 11-6 win over San Jose State

No. 2 Stanford defeated #6 San Jose State 11-6 at Corona del Mar high school in Newport Beach, CA to advance to the semifinals of the Irvine Tournament. Stanford once again distributed the scoring evenly as seven Cardinal were able to get on the board. Christina Hewko and Lauren Silver once again led the way with two goals apiece, and Jessica Steffens and Kelly Donahue also chipped in two goals of their own.

Three other Stanford players were able to find the net. Kelsey Holshouser, Jacquelyn Gauthier, Alison Gregorka each scored once and gave the Stanford a couple margin of victory in the match. Juliet Moss led San Jose State with two goals of her own.

Stanford only had a 3-2 advantage after the first period, but in the crucial second period the Cardinal was able to shutout the Spartans and take a 6-2 advantage into the halftime break. The Spartans were able to chip into the lead in the third period, outscoring Stanford in the period 3-2. With only 8-5 lead heading into the fourth period, the Cardinal once again got defensive and outscored San Jose State 3-1 in the final period . With the 11-6 victory, the Cardinal now are one of four teams unbeaten in the tournament and face rival USC in a semifinal match at 11:45 am Sunday.

In the other semifinal, No. 1 UCLA faces California with the winner facing the Stanford-USC winner in the tourney championship. Stanford also shifts tomorrow from Corona del Mar high school and heads to the Anteater Aquatics Complex on the UC-Irvine campus.
