IRVINE, CALIF. - The No. 5-ranked California women's water polo team (5-4) upset No. 4-ranked Hawaii, 5-4 in overtime in the second round Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the UC Irvine Invitational at Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears, who also defeated No. 14 UC San Diego, 14-5, Saturday morning, will now face No. 1-ranked UCLA at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
In the Bears' victory over the Rainbow Wahine, Hawaii had taken a 3-2 lead going into the fourth period. Cal was able to tie the match at 4-4 with 1:11 left in the contest on a goal by freshman two-meter Grace Reynolds. Junior Vanessa Lindsey then scored the eventual winning goal for the Bears with 1:24 remaining in the first overtime period. Junior goalie Heather Stuart had an impressive 15 saves against Hawaii. Reynolds led Cal with two goals. Junior Molly Hayes and sophomore Melissa Wheeler also recorded goals for the Bears.
Cal had defeated UC San Diego, 14-5, in the opening round of the UC Irvine Invitational. Freshman Meghan Corso led the Bears with three goals, and senior Elsie Windes, Lindsey and Reynolds added two goals apiece. Stuart had seven saves in the morning match.
