No. 4 Cal Women's Water Polo Upended by No. 1 UCLA, 12-8

BERKELEY, CALIF. - A 3-0 run in the second period by top-ranked UCLA proved to be the difference as the Bruins defeated the No. 4-ranked Cal women's water polo team, 12-8, Friday night at Spieker Aquatics Complex. UCLA improved to 5-0 and 1-0 in MPSF play, while the Golden Bears dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the MPSF. Senior All-American Elsie Windes paced Cal with a match-high four goals, including a five-meter penalty shot with less than a second left in the match.

Besides scoring the last goal of the match, Windes also had the first goal of the contest, scoring from eight meters out with 6:14 in the first period. UCLA came roaring back on goals by Kelly Rulon (5:52) and Courtney Mathewson (4:47). Windes responded again with another goal from almost the exact place as her first goal to tie the match, 2-2, with 4:15 left in the first period. The Bruins then gained a two-goal advantage of scores by Anne Belden (2:10) and Katie Rulon (1:13). Junior Molly Hayes got Cal within one, 4-3, on a score with 30 seconds left in the opening quarter.

UCLA took control of the match by outscoring the Bears, 3-0, in the second period. Kelly Rulon notched her second goal of the contest with a lob over Cal goalie Heather Stuart with 7:06 in the second. Gabrielle Dominic later scored on a shot that was deflected by Stuart with 6:10 left in the period, and Tanya Gandy added another scored with 27 seconds left in the second to give the Bruins a 7-3 lead.

To two teams traded goals the rest of the way. Cal's Hayes knocked down a long shot with 6:24 in the third quarter and freshman Grace Reynolds scored on a lob shot at 5:13 after grabbing a rebound off a Windes shot attempt. In the fourth period, Reynolds scored on a shot from nine meters out with 3:12 left in the match, followed by Windes' goals at 1:51 and .09 seconds left in match on her five-meter penalty shot.

 

 

UCLA was led by two goals apiece from Mathewson, Gandy and Kelly Rulon. Bruin goalie Emily Feher had four saves, while Cal's Stuart finished with five saves.

Cal will next travel to the UC Irvine Tournament, Feb. 24-25, at the Anteater Pool in Irvine, Calif.
