MALIBU, Calif. - Three-time All-American and West Coast Conference (WCC) Player of the Year Katie Wilkins inked a professional volleyball contract with the Hungkuk Pink Spiders of the Korean volleyball league. The contract will run through April 1, 2007.
Wilkins played for Pepperdine during the 2000-03 seasons, leading the Waves to an overall record of 103-18 including a 54-2 mark in conference play.
During her four years in Malibu, Wilkins led Pepperdine four NCAA Championship Tournament appearances and two trips to the `Elite Eight' as well as a National No. 1 seed in 2003.
Since exhausting her college eligibility, Wilkins has spent time playing on the AVP tour and most recently as a member of the USA National Team.
She says that after her current contract is up, she is looking forward to rejoining the national team as it begins preparations for the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
"It has been a great experience so far," noted the Lakeside, Calif. native. "The girls are very nice and I get along with them all very well. The style of play is much faster paced then what I am used to and it took me a while to adjust. After this season is over I will get a month off for myself, which I haven't had in over a year. After the break, I will head back to the National team for a year-and-a-half straight until the 2008 Olympics."
More information about the Pink Spiders can be found on the team's official web site, http://www.hungkuk.co.kr/company/volleyball/player.jsp.
