Women's Tennis Inks One During Early Signing Period

ATLANTA - Rebecca Marino, a 2008 blue-chip recruit, has committed to play tennis at Georgia Tech, head coach Bryan Shelton announced Tuesday.

Marino, the nation's No. 2 recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, is a 6-1 Vancouver, British Columbia native that has reached as high as No. 40 the world in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Rankings and currently stands at No. 66. This past season, Marino has registered a 24-11 singles record and earned a career-high WTA singles ranking of 335. She recently defeated Jill Craybas, the world's No. 65 player, at the Quebec City event.

The British Columbian recorded a remarkable 52-9 juniors record in 2007, including a 15-5 record against other TennisRecruiting.net blue chip recruits. Highlights from her career include winning the 2007 Canadian Junior International Championship, earning the 2006 U16 Indoor National Singles Championship, representing Canada at the 2006 World Junior Team Championships, and becoming the youngest player to ever win the Roger Open at Stanley Park Women's Open Championship when she did so in 2005 as a 14-year old.

"We are very excited about Rebecca re-committing to Georgia Tech," Shelton said. "She has grown both on and off the court during the past year. She has matured and improved her game and her results are reflective of that."
