SWARTHMORE, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team opened its fall schedule at the Swarthmore Invite last weekend. Leading the way for the Blue Jays were sophomore Julia Guarino (Bradenton, FL/Saint Stephen's Episcopal) and freshman Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview), who each won their pool in their respective singles flights.
Guarino went 3-0 in pool A of flight 4, while Warren went 3-0 in pool B of the singles flight 3. Guarino defeated Lamie Nguyen of Swarthmore in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) in the first round. In the second, she outlasted Kristen Mueller of Delaware in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 1-0 [11-9]). She then beat Elizabeth Gallo of Haverford in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to win the pool. Warren won all three of her matches in straight sets to win pool B of flight 3. In the first round, she did not drop a game in beating Saritah Kapadia of Haverford). In her second round win over Marissa Lee of Swarthmore, she dropped just one game. Her third round match proved to be the toughest, as she beat Samantha Carnall of Delaware 7-5, 6-4.
In pool B of flight 1, junior Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) went 2-1 with wins over Katherine Wettick (Haverford) and Rosie DuBrin (Swarthmore). Sophomore Abby Dwyer (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach) and junior Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) each posted 2-1 records in pool A and B, respectively of flight 2. Dwyer picked up wins over Christina Bradley (Haverford) and Luann Cignavitch (Swarthmore). Schubert defeated Alexis Hickman (Swarthmore) and Katherine Drooyan (Haverford).
Freshman Mallory Willenborg (Miami Shores, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) also posted a 2-1 record. She earned wins over Sarah Gibson (Haverford) and Rebecca Commito (Swarthmore). And in pool B of flight 4, sophomore Alli Lee (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough) went 2-1 with wins over Ingrid Pancaost (Swarthmore) and Meaghan Ryan (Haverford).
In doubles action, Bhamidipati and junior Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) won their first round match in flight A over Drooyan and Fisun 8-3. The pair then fell in the semifinals to Carnall and Gruber. Bhamidipati and Berlinghof went on to beat Wettick and Bradley 8-5 in the third-place match. Schubert and Dywer lost their first round match to Fenimore and Berry 8-2, but went on to win the consolation bracket.
In flight B, Warren and Willenborg advanced to the finals before falling to Campbell and Doran 8-0. Guarino and Lee lost in the first round, but advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket where they lost to Lee and Nguyen 8-6.
Hopkins returns to action this weekend at the Towson Tiger Invitational, September 12-13.
