Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart men's and women's tennis teams kicked off their fall season with local doubles action over the weekend. The women's squad hosted the SHU Doubles Invitational while the men's team played across town at the Fairfield University Doubles Festival.
For the women, junior Ashley Amalfe (Clark, NJ) and sophomore Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) had the best showing, advancing to the finals of the number two doubles bracket. The duo posted an 8-5 win over Bryant in the opening round then took a tiebreaker over Fairfield round two. Harrington and Amalfe then posted wins over a pair of teams from UConn to reach the final, where the ultimately fell to a duo from Albany, 8-3.
The top two doubles squads each posted two wins for the Pioneers. Junior Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ) and sophomore Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) lost their first round match before rebounding to beat teams from Albany and Byant before falling in the semifinals. Meanwhile freshman Kate Donelly (Centerville, MA) and senior Nicole Betz (Long Beach, NY) also posted victories over Providence and UConn. In addition, senior Mandy Finkelstein (Portland, CT) and freshman Delany Downing (Englewood, CO) picked up a pair of victories en-route to a fifth place finish in the number two bracket.
On the men's side a pair of teams picked up two wins for the Pioneers. In the top bracket, sophomore Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) and junior Adam Gart (Beford, MA) posted identical 9-8 (7-3) victories over St. Peter's and UConn. Meanwhile in the second flight, sophomores Michael Syer (Oakville, ON) and Chris Ujkic (Mattituck, NY) were victorious over Queens and St. Peter's.
The SHU women's tennis squad will be in action this weekend at the Hofstra Invitational. The men's team is off until September 20th when they face Siena and St. Francis (NY) in dual meet action.
