Senior Iulia Doci
Sept. 8, 2008
FAIRFIELD, CT - NJIT women's tennis had a smashing opening to 2008-09, as two Highlanders teams combined to post a 9-1 record at the SHU Doubles Invitational, hosted by Sacred Heart Sunday.
The tournament was conducted in three flights and NJIT had a team in the first flight and a team in the third flight.
NJIT's first team of senior Iulia Doci and junior Dasa Stanimirovic reached the final of the first flight, falling to UConn's Kelley LoRusso and Emily Herb in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (6). LoRusso and Herb were UConn's number one and number two singles players, respectively, last year, as well the number one doubles team for the Huskies.
UConn's win in the Flight 1 final avenged a tiebreaker loss in the first match of the day, when NJIT's Doci and Stanimirovic prevailed, 8-7 (4).
NJIT's other Flight 1 preliminary results were: 8-7 (5) over Sacred Heart Red (Kate Donnelly/Nicole Betz); and, 8-3 over Providence (Meghan Gilroy/Ashley Rissolo). NJIT then beat Sacred Heart White (Darcy Demers/Julianne Kasinow) in the semifinals, 8-1, before falling in the close final match vs. UConn.
NJIT's team in Flight 3 posted the following results: defeated Fairfield White (Caitlin Savoy/Tara Brennan/Nicole Mayban), 8-3; defeated UConn (Allison Campitello/Alex Venezia/Jennifer Marotta), 8-5; defeated Sacred Heart (Lindsey Scierka/Kristina Chao/Kristin Legenza), 8-1; defeated Albany (Caitlin Crowley/Melissa Coughlin), 8-5 (semifinal) and then Fairfield Red (Marisa Voloshin/Michaela Cerrone/Gretchen Amberg), 8-4 in the final.
Next up for the Highlanders are the ECAC Championships, which will be contested on Saturday and Sunday at Trinity College in Hartford, CT.
