Grand Valley State women's head tennis coach John Black announced the signing of two student-athletes to attend and play tennis for the Lakers. Whitney Bindus (Caledonia, Mich./East Kentwood) and McCall Monte (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./South) will join the squad for the 2006-07 season.
Bindus, an East Kentwood High School graduate, tallied a 16-9 overall record at #1 singles as a senior. She compiled 53 wins during her high school career and was a three-time all-conference honoree. Bindus was named team MVP her junior and senior years and was ranked as high as #2 in West Michigan in the USTA Tournament. Whitney was also in the top 120 in the Midwest Section. In high school she was coached by Duy Tran and privately she was led by Mickey Mikesell. At Grand Valley State, Bindus will be a pre-dental major.
Monte, a graduate of Grosse Pointe South High School, finished her high school career with an 117-24 record. She was an all-state selection four times and won the state championship title once. Monte was also a four-time all-conference and all-metro team honoree and received the Blue Devil of the Year award. McCall was a member of the National Honor Society and was on the honor roll every year. She was also the first girl at her high school to receive the engineering award and will major in engineering at GVSU.
"I am extremely excited about our incoming freshmen," said Black. "Whitney is a consistent groundstroker with great speed and McCall plays an aggressive baseline game. Both women have outstanding tennis games and should challenge our returning players this fall."
