Washington & Lee To Meet Amherst

Generals and Amherst advance to Women's NCAA Championship

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Washington & Lee University won all three doubles matches, and then claimed the first two singles results to top Williams College, 5-0, on Wednesday in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis National Semifinals at the University of Mary Washington. The Generals will advance to the NCAA Championship on Thursday at 1 pm against Amherst College.

 

Emily Applegate and Kristen McClung won at one doubles, 8-3, and Luren Caire and Leah Weston won at three, 8-5 to take a 2-0 lead, and then Katie Tabb and Ginny Wortham edged Grace Baljon and Allie Rottkamp, 9-8, at two to give W&L a 3-0 headed into singles play.


 

 

 

Washington & Lee won the first set in five of the six matches, with Tabb at three and Kelly Will at four winning by 6-2, 6-1 scores.

 

Williams will take on Sewanee for the third place match at 9 am, preceding the championship at 1 pm.

 

Top seeded Amherst College defeated Sewanee - University of the South, 5-0, in the NCAA national semifinals on Wednesday at the University of Mary Washington. The Lord Jeffs advance to the national championship match, which will be played at UMW on Thursday at 1 pm.

 

Amherst won all three doubles matches, as Katie Hudson and Jill Wexler won at two, 8-4; Alicia Menezes and Brittany Berckes won at one, 8-5, and Jennifer Murphy and Laura Stein won at three, 8-6.

 

Berckes defeated South's Laura Fanjoy, 6-4, 6-2, at two singles, and then Monica Snyder clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at three singles.

 

Amherst will face the winner of Wednesday afternoon's match between Washington & Lee University and Williams College for the NCAA title on Thursday at 1 pm.
