Provo, UT (UWIRE) --

The BYU softball team defeated Southern Utah University 11-0 and 12-0 in two shutouts at Gail Miller Field Tuesday.

The victories improve BYU's season record to 26-13. In the first game, the Cougars played their first no hitter of the season.

"Our defense is as solid as it has ever been for us," coach Gordon Eakin said.

BYU had an impressive first inning, scoring eight runs and holding Southern Utah University to none. The Cougars came out strong with a two run homer by second batter Angeline Quiocho. Stephanie Platt-Hopkins hit the second homerun of the game along with two RBIs.

BYU scored another three runs in the second inning including a homerun by Jessica Purcell. Neither team scored any runs in the fourth inning.

The game ended after the top of the fifth because of the eight run rule. Pitcher Christina Gwyn-Trice records the win for this game brining her season record to 10-5.

The second game continued much like the first with the Cougars getting off to an early lead scoring six runs in the first inning.

During the second inning the Cougars hit three homeruns. The first by Daniela Snow, followed shortly after by another from Stephanie Platt-Hopkins and then a two run homer by Kristin Delahoussaye.

In the third inning SUU recorded their first hit of the night but were unable to score any runs. The game was once again ended after the top of the fifth inning due to the eight run rule.

Freshman pitcher Paige Affleck earned another win bringing her season record to 8-2.

"The last ten games we've really started to get in our stride and play Cougar softball," coach Eakin said.

The Cougars will be in action next in Las Vegas on Thursday where they will play a double header against the University of Las Vegas at 3 and 5 p.m.
