Nov. 18, 2008

The Auburn softball team has signed a pair of players for 2010, receiving letters of commitment from catcher Caitlin Schultze and shortstop Kelsey Cartwright.

Cartwright is entering her senior season at Goodpasture Christian High School in Nashville, Tenn. Cartwright signed with the Tigers after being recruited by Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia.

As a junior, Cartwright hit .519 with 68 hits in 131 at-bats, 48 RBI, 54 runs, 20 doubles, five triples and a school, single-season record 14 home runs. She was selected first-team all-state and a Gatorade player of the year nominee in 2008 in leading Goodpasture High School to the Tennessee AA state title.

For her career, Cartwright has a .466 average with 56 stolen bases, 58 doubles, 16 triples and a school-record 32 home runs.

"Kelsey Cartwright has contributed in big ways to a winning program at Goodpasture High School," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "I believe Kelsey will carry that success into the college game here at Auburn. We are looking at Kelsey to bring some power to the offense. Kelsey is very athletic and can play anywhere on the field."

A New Jersey native, Caitlin Schultze hit .346 with two doubles, one triple, two home runs and 13 RBI as a junior in 2008. A fourth-team class AA all-state catcher, Schultze has a strong arm behind the plate and was also recruited by Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia Tech and Syracuse.

"I am excited about Caitlin joining the 2010 team," Deese said. "Caitlin will add some power to the offense and share time behind the plate. We are getting the whole student-athlete package with Caitlin as she is a very accomplished student as well as a talented young athlete."

Auburn finished the 2008 season with a 38-22 overall record and a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament in College Station, Texas. The Tigers open the 2009 season Feb. 6-8 at the Florida International Tournament in Miami.
