Kerry Hammond hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning

Decatur, Ala. - The Shorter College Lady Hawks gave a valiant last inning effort on Saturday morning in the NAIA National Championship, taking a 4-2 loss to the No. 1-ranked California Baptist University Lancers. Shorter is now 1-2 in pool play in the tournament.
California Baptist scored their first run in the first inning on an Erin Moore RBI single. Two more runs came across in the fourth inning on an Allison Dennis two-run home run, and one more run in the fifth made it a 4-0 ballgame.
In the seventh inning, Shorter's bats finally came alive. Solo home runs from Kerry Hammond and Becca Thomas put the Lady Hawks within two, but it wouldn't be enough as the Lancers went on to win 4-2.
Shorter's had two other hits in the game, one from Kali Milford and another from Thomas.
Libby Munson started the game for the Lady Hawks for the loss, pitching four innings, giving up eight hits, walking four and striking out three. Jordan Najafi pitched the final two innings giving up no hits. California Baptist's Amy Thomas got the win.
Shorter plays again at 3 p.m. against Dickinson State University in their final pool play game.
