BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine softball team was defeated in both games of a doubleheader at Boston University on Thursday afternoon. In the first game, the Black Bears lost 5-2 in a complete game by pitcher Sarah Bennis. In game two, Maine was defeated 11-5. The doubleheader was scheduled for Wednesday, but delayed until Thursday by rain. The third game of the series will not be played. Maine is 13-22 overall on the season and 7-6 in America East action.
In the first game of the day, Maine's only scoring came on a double by Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) in the third inning that drove in Jess Brady (Jackman, Maine) and Dana Grimm (Coopersville, Mich.). Sarah Bennis (Pownal, Maine) pitched a complete game and had two strikeouts. For Boston University, Ashlee Freeman had seven strikeouts in the win.
In the second game, Alexis Pullen (Augusta, Maine) had the start. She was replaced in the second inning by Jenna Merchant (Sandy, Utah), who went four innings for the Black Bears with three strikeouts. Candace Jaegge (Moorpark, Calif.) came into the game in the sixth inning. Maine scored all five runs in the third inning. Kristie Hawkins (Portland, Maine) and Molly McKinney (Byron Center, Mich.) both were 1-of-3 with RBIs singles. Amy Kuhl (Phoenix, Ariz.) was 2-of-3 with two doubles. Lauren Dulkis (Peabody, Mass.) was 2-of-4 in the game.
