Worcester, Mass. - The Crusaders hosted the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in this afternoon's conference game at freshman field. In game one the Mountain Hawks defeated the Crusaders 9-2 but Holy Cross battled back in game two to win 8-5 splitting 1-1 with Lehigh improving to 6-23 (2-8 Patriot League) while Lehigh drops to 30-12-1 (10-4 Patriot League). In the sixth inning of game two senior Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) hit a homerun, breaking the school record in career homeruns. She now holds the record with 14 homeruns.
In game one Lehigh took an early lead with three runs in the first and second inning. The Crusaders scored in the fifth when Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) was walked sending Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) home. Lehigh scored in the sixth as did Holy Cross when Correale hit a single sending Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) across home plate. Lehigh grabbed two more runs in the seventh inning for the win.
Pitching for the Crusaders was Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) with five strikeouts, three walks, seven hits and six runs dropping to 1-10. Closing the game was Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) with one walk, four hits and three runs.
In game two Lehigh jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the second inning Seniuk singled, sending Correale home. The Crusaders gained four more runs in the third inning to take the lead when Correale singled and brought Sam Lenhardt (Duxbury, Mass.) home, Seniuk singled brining Fleming across the plate and Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) hit a double gaining two RBI's as Correale and Cruz each scored.
Lehigh made two runs in the fourth inning but the Crusaders finished out the game in the sixth inning as Fleming hit a double bringing Jayme Elliot (Gardena, Calif.) home. O'Neil hit her 14th homerun of her career, third this season, to gain two RBI's as Fleming came across home plate. Lehigh had one more run in the sixth inning.
Pitching game two was Audette with one strikeout, two walks, four runs and three hits. Closing the last three innings was Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) with two strikeouts, two walks, two hits and one run to improve to 2-4.
The Crusaders finish off the series with Lehigh tomorrow, April 20 at freshman field. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m.
