Three Second-Inning Runs Enough for Wright State to Top Miami Softball, 6-1

April 12, 2005

OXFORD, Ohio - Wright State (9-12) evened the score of Tuesday's doubleheader at Miami Softball Field with a 6-1 win over the RedHawks (22-18). Junior Courtney Salmon (Auburn, Wash./Auburn) (10-7) found rough going early on in the contest and the Miami bats were unable to provide her enough help in the nightcap.

Salmon ran into trouble with two outs in the top of the second inning, beginning a walk and a hit batter. Jacqueline Macy doubled to rightfield and picked up an RBI, and a second run was able to score when Miami rightfielder Christine Bills (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest) had trouble fielding the ball on a hop. With the Raiders up 2-0, Carly Rutherford knocked in Macy for a 3-0 lead before Salmon was able to record her third strikeout of the inning. The visitors added another in the fourth when Mary Jane D'Arcy singled home Kristen Farley from third with a sharp liner off the glove of third baseman Keri McCready (Glendale, Ariz./North Canyon).

Miami broke the shutout in the fifth when pinch hitter Kristen Hays (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) doubled home McCready from first with one out to cut Wright State's lead to 4-1. But the visitors got the run back in their next at bat when Macy's two-out single scored Farley for a 5-1 Wright State advantage. Raider pitcher Amanda Cody provided WSU's final run with a long single crushed to right-center that scored Brandi Steiner from first.

Cody (3-5) used the run support to her advantage, limiting Miami to four hits while striking out three, walking one and earning the RedHawk run. Salmon gave up eight hits and earned five of WSU's six runs. She struck out five and walked one. Hays led Miami at the plate with a 2-for-2 second game.

Miami hosts another non-conference foe on Thursday when Morehead State of the Ohio Valley Conference visits for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. The Red and White faces its next Mid-American Conference foe at Akron on Saturday and Sunday.
