Early Goal Holds Up As Truman Moves Into Round Of 16

Truman defeats Washburn for first time this year with win

Nov. 16, 2008

Nov. 16, 2008; CANYON, TEXAS – Senior Brigitte Pohren’s first-half goal was enough for the Truman women’s soccer team Sunday, as the Bulldogs punched a ticket to the Sweet 16 with a 1-0 win against Washburn on the West Texas A&M University campus in Canyon, Texas.

Pohren’s (Omaha, Neb.; Duchesne Academy) goal came in the 11th minute off a pass from freshman Megan Buri (Parkville, Mo.; Park Hill South) to put Truman (16-3-2) ahead early. Pohren headed Buri’s feed past Washburn goalkeeper Ashley Klone, marking her second tally of the 2008 season.

Truman’s defense shined throughout the match, as the Bulldogs clamped down on Washburn’s high-powered offense – allowing just seven Lady Blues shots. WU put only three of those shots on Truman freshman goalkeeper Jayne Grisham (Bridgeton, Mo.; Ursuline Academy), who got just her second start of the season.

The Bulldogs defeated Washburn for the third time this season with Sunday’s win and will advance to face Texas A&M-Commerce in the NCAA Sweet 16 next weekend. Truman will look to host both the Sweet 16 and Quarterfinal round action in Kirksville after TAMU-Commerce upset top-seeded Central Missouri in Warrensburg on Sunday, 2-0. Official word regarding site location and game times will be announced tomorrow.

Those squads will be joined by the two advancing teams from the West Region for a pair of matches Friday (Nov. 21) and the NCAA Quarterfinal on Sunday (Nov. 23).
