PENSACOLA, Fla. — Of all the great women’s soccer teams that have been put together by Head Coach Joe Bartlinski, not one has won more than 20 games in a season, until today.  The No. 2 ranked Argos shutout the defending national champions Tampa Spartans 2-0 Sunday afternoon in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.  Juniors Marcela Franco and Jodi Galucci supplied the firepower for the Argos offense and the defense held strong to record their 16th shutout of the season.

It did not take long for the Argos potent offense to mount an attack on the Tampa defense.  In just the sixth minute of the match Shaneka Gordon sent a cross from the left side to an open Galucci in front of the box for the open net score.

In the second half the Argos offense started to find more open space, enabling them to fire off 13 shots in the second half.  Franco would find the back of the net in the 75th minute to put the Argos up 2-0.  After a Spartans’ foul, Franco lined up to take the free kick just outside the box and put her shot inside the upper left corner of the goal for her 19th goal of the season.

With the victory, Argos goalkeeper Courtney Jones earns her 50th career victory, tying Mandy Harland for first all-time

The Argos will host Rollins in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament next Friday, November 21st.
