Nov. 16, 2008

WESTERVILLE, OHIO - #16 Otterbein (18-1-2) defeated #19 Denison (15-5-1) by a score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Clements Field in the second round of the NCAA Division III women’s soccer tournament.

The Cardinals grabbed an early 1-0 lead when sophomore midfielder Rachel Degen buried a shot from 30 yards out in the 13th minute.

Freshman forward Adrienne Novak then extended the Otterbein lead to 2-0 when she maneuvered her way through Denison defenders and scored at the 30:50 mark. This marked Novak’s second goal in as many contests, as she recorded the game winner in Otterbein’s 1-0 first round victory over Penn State Altoona.

Neither team scored the remainder of the half as the Cards went into the break holding a 2-0 advantage.

Denison did their best to climb back into the match in the second half, but the Otterbein defense proved too strong as the Big Red were unable to slip a shot past Cardinal goalkeeper Tara Carter.

Denison held a 10-6 shot advantage while both teams attempted five corner kicks.

Carter turned in solid performance between the posts by tallying six saves, while Denison goalie Courtney Cobb did not have any.

With the victory, Otterbein advances to play in the Round of 16 against Amherst College (MA), who defeated Springfield (MA) by a score of 3-0 in their second round contest. The site for the match has yet to be determined.
