CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina will continue its 2006 NCAA women's soccer title quest Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Tar Heels play host to the University of Tennessee at Fetzer Field. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, children and senior citizens. The gates to Fetzer Field will open at 4:30 p.m.
North Carolina heads into the match with a record of 23-1. UNC has won 23 matches in a row since losing its season opener 1-0 at Texas A&M in two overtimes.
Carolina is led in scoring by two Soccer Buzz National Player of the Year finalists and a dynamic freshman forward. Midfielder Yael Averbuch leads the Tar Heels in scoring with 35 points on 15 goals and five assists. Heather O'Reilly has 30 points on eight goals and 14 assists and freshman striker Whitney Engen has 31 points on 10 goals and 11 assists.
UNC's defense, which has allowed only eight goals all season, is led by juniors Jessica Maxwell, Robyn Gayle and Ariel Harris.
UNC has outscored its opponents 68-8 this season. UNC defeated UNC Asheville 7-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament and downed Navy 4-0 in the second round.
The winner of the UNC-UT matchup will meet the victor in the Virginia-Texas A&M third round matchup on Thanksgiving weekend in the NCAA quarterfinal round. The Women's College Cup is in Cary, N.C. the opening weekend of December.
