LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Senior defender Ashley Kirk's goal at the 80:23 mark lifted the 16th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team (15-4-3) to a thrilling 1-0 win over Long Beach State University (14-5-4) Friday evening in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

USD will advance to the second round and face UCLA in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday at UCLA's Drake Stadium.

Amy Epsten took a corner kick for the Toreros, the ball bounced around a bit in front of the goal, then Christine Mock fired a shot that was saved by the 49ers goalkeeper and Kirk was there for the rebound and rocketed off the shot into the back of the net to give USD the 1-0 win.

The 49ers had a good scoring opportunity not go their way in the 15th minute of action. Bo Rael took a shot off a corner kick and it was blocked by the USD defense, the rebound then went to the feet of Kim Silos who hit a shot that went wide to preserve the scoreless contest.

Brittany Cameron was credited with the win in goral for the Toreros as she allowed no goals and recorded one save. Liz Ramos was saddled with the loss in goal for the 49ers, as she allowed one goal and recorded four saves.

USD outshot the 49wers 10-9 and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
