Nov. 14, 2008

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Texas junior Emily Anderson recorded her fourth goal of the season in the 52nd minute to lead the Longhorns past Washington State University 1-0 in the First Round of the 2008 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. UT advances to the NCAA Second Round for the third straight year and will face the winner of the Portland/Northern Arizona match.

Anderson received the ball from freshman Lucy Keith just over 25 yards out in the center of the field. The junior outplayed two Cougar defenders and fired a shot that sailed past the hands of WSU Keeper Lindsay Parlee into the lower corner of the net to give the Horns the 1-0 lead. The score was Anderson's second career goal in postseason play.

Texas kept up the offensive pressure firing three shots over the next few minutes. The Longhorns produced two shots on goal after a Stephanie Logterman corner kick. Freshman Lucy Keith got her head on the cross but had her shot deflected to an open Kylie Doniak who was in the upper right corner of the short box. Doniak slipped a shot past the Cougar defense but Parlee was able to make the diving save.

The first half was a battle of the midfield with the Longhorns holding the shot advantage 4-3. Washington State produced the only shot on goal in the 20th minute but the Texas backline was able to clear it out and start their counter attack.

With five minutes remaining in the first period WSU's Tiara Pittman drove the ball down the left goal line and attempted to cross the ball but her shot rebounded off the left post setting up a Cougar corner. Following the set piece, the Texas backline proved why it is one of the best in the nation as they diverted the Cougars from taking any shots despite spending quite a few minutes in the UT box.

Senior keeper Dianna Pfenninger made three saves to help the Horns post their 11th shutout this season, breaking the single-season shutout record of 10 that was set in 2006 and 2007.

First whistle for Sunday's Second Round match is set for 3 p.m. Central at Clive Charles Soccer Complex on the University of Portland campus.
