KINGSTON, R.I. - Freshman Thorunn Helga Jonsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) Island was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in voting conducted among the Conference's head coaches.
With Jonsdottir at midfield, Rhode Island posted a 10-8-2 overall record and a 7-2-2 A-10 mark as it enters this week's Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 2 seed. Jonsdottir has started all 20 games for the Rams and tallied four goals, three of which were were game-winners to go along with three assists for 11 points.
Jonsdottir leads the All-Rookie team and is joined by teammate Debra Nelson (Chepachet, R.I.) who was also named to the team.
Nelson was recently named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after posting two goals in the 2-1 victory over Duquesne. Nelson also tallied an assist in the Rams 1-0 win over St. Bonaventure and has a total of five goals and five assists for 15 points.
All-Conference first-team honors were given to senior Kelly McTurk (Niantic, Conn.) and junior Melanie Kasparek (Trumbull, Conn.) who have been key players for the Rams this season.
The 2003 Offensive Player of the Year, Student Athlete of the Year and 2001 Rookie of the Year, Kasparek, leads the team in goals with eight and two assists for 18 points. McTurk, a strong player on the defensive side of the ball for the Rams, tallied one goal this season and four assists.
Junior midfielder, Megan Kasparek (Trumbull, Conn.) earned second-team accolades for the second time in two years, after notching five goals and six assists for 16 points in the 2004 campaign.
The Kasparek twins were also named to the Academic All-Conference team for not only their success on the field but also their success in the classroom.
Melanie, a psychology major, boasts a 3.970 GPA and earned Academic All-Conference honors in 2003. Megan has maintained a 3.941 GPA in communicative disorders, has been on the Dean's List all four semesters and named to the Commissioners honor roll.
The Rams will be back in action on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in Amherst, Mass. as they compete in the semifinals at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Rams will take on the highest remaining seed from the quarterfinals.
