PHOENIX, AZ - Reserve midfielder Ashley Schoenkopf (So., Vancouver/Mountain View) scored in the 13th minute of overtime to give Western Washington University a 1-0 victory over Dixie State College in a non-league women's soccer game played at Antelope Field on the Grand Canyon University campus.
It was the third straight win, all by one goal, for the Vikings, who improved to 10-3-0. They have won seven of their last eight games. Dixie State fell to 5-3-2.
"It was very hot, close to 100 degrees," said Western coach Travis Connell, "so we needed all of our players ... Not just Ashley (Schoenkopf) with the goal, but we got a lift from a lot of players off the bench. It was a real team effort to get this victory."
Schoenkopf headed in the game winner in the 103rd minute off a corner kick to the far post by Rosie Zadra (Jr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap). It was Schoenkopf's third goal of the season and Zadra's third assist.
Western opened the scoring in the 11th minute, Kelly Irving (Fr., Gig Harbor) getting a flick from Amanda Font (Jr., Federal Way/Decatur) and finding the net from 18 yards.
Dixie State tied the score in the 66th minute, Cami Drecksel getting behind the defense. Tauni Huddleston was credited with an assist.
The Vikings had a 15-5 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in corner kicks. Western plays host Grand Canyon on Monday (7 p.m.).
