SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The match-up between the No. 3 Santa Clara Broncos and the No. 6 UCLA Bruins lived up to the hype as the Bruins claimed a 2-1 overtime victory over Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium Friday night.
UCLA's Danesha Adams netted the game's first goal only 25 seconds into the match to give the Bruins an early 1-0 lead and put the Broncos on their heels. The match stayed that way until later into the second half when Santa Clara began to push the action and threaten the Bruin lead.
The Broncos finally broke through and equalized in the 86th minute off of a set piece. Tina Estrada's free kick was saved by Bruin keeper Henderson, who then blocked Jordan Angeli's close-range shot before Hayley Siegel rose above the scrum in front to head it home to make it 1-1.
For the final four minutes of regulation and the first six minutes of overtime the pace remained frenetic as both teams alternately attacked and fell back. It wasn't until Adams again got free, receiving a pass from Jill Oakes and beating Bronco keeper Julie Ryder to the lower-left corner of the goal to give UCLA the victory.
With the win the Bruins improve to 6-1-0 while the Broncos suffer their first setback of the season and stand at 4-1-1.
UCLA returns to action this Sunday, taking on St. Mary's at 1:00 p.m.
