FRISCO (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team gave visiting North Carolina a run for its money but the fourth-ranked Tar Heels came out on top with a 3-0 victory over the Mustangs Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 2,108 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. Both teams even their respective records to 1-1 on the young season.
SMU stayed with the Tar Heels for 20 minutes in the first half but UNC turned up the heat a notch as Yael Averbush scored UNC's first goal at the 24:31 mark with a loose ball off a rebound shot. Averbush collected her second goal of the game nearly three minutes later with a long blast that found the upper right corner of the net, giving UNC a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, SMU attempted to put its offensive attack into motion but UNC's defense stood strong. The Tar Heels put the game out of SMU's reach at the 86:05 mark when Katie Brooks tapped in a ball which was rolling parallel to the goal line in front of the net.
UNC fired 20 shots while the Mustangs managed four for the game. SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter made 10 saves while Tar Heel goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough made one save.
SMU's next game is set for Thursday with a contest at Sam Houston State in Huntsville. Kick-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
