AMHERST, Mass. - With the 2008 season opener just days away, the UMass women's soccer team prepared for its trip to Binghamton this Sunday by taking on Army in an exhibition match at Rudd Field on Wednesday evening. The Minutewomen came away with a 1-0 win in the contest as sophomore Kelsey Anderson netted the game's lone goal in the 33rd minute.

The Black Knights opened up on the attack and had the first scoring chance of the day for either side come off the foot of Pia White in the 13th minute with her shot sailing just inches over the crossbar.

UMass, which had only three shots in the first half, connected on its second attempt at 32:57 as Anderson put the ball away off a rebound. Assists went to redshirt-senior Tina Rodriguez and freshman Natalie Muka after the initial shot by Rodriguez came off a corner kick by freshman Natalie Muka.

Army had one more dangerous scoring chance to end the opening period. In the 41st minute, Deanna Clegg rocketed the ball towards the left corner of the net, but was robbed by a fingertip save by UMass junior goalkeeper Lauren Luckey.

In the second half, the Minutewomen controlled the bulk of the possession and out-shot the Black Knights, 11-3, to bring the final tally to 14-10 in favor of UMass. Luckey made four stops and played all 90 minutes, while Alex Lostetter, Monica Lee and Brittany Fearnside split time for Army. Lee allowed the goal and finished with four saves.

Highlighting the many second half chances for the Minutewomen was a shot by Tina Rodriguez that hit the crossbar in the 71st minute.

UMass will begin its regular season slate this Sunday, Aug. 24, when the team will travel to Binghamton, N.Y., to face Binghamton at 1 p.m.
