BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (August 7, 2008) – For the fifth consecutive season, the University of West Florida women’s soccer team was tabbed the pre-season favorite in the Gulf South Conference coaches’ poll, it was announced on Thursday by GSC Commissioner Nathan N. Salant. The Argonauts collected five of nine possible first place votes among the league’s head coaches, with the other four going to defending champion Montevallo.

“I think this shows how tight things will be this year,” UWF Head Coach Joe Bartlinski explained. “It also shows what a great job the other coaches in the conference have done in building quality programs.”

The Argonauts were the GSC runners-up in the 2007 season, falling in the finals of the conference tournament after entering as the top seed. UWF earned an NCAA post-season bid for the sixth straight year, and the team went undefeated (8-0) in regular season conference play and finished the year 15-4.

West Florida was one of two teams featuring three players on the pre-season All-GSC Team. Goalkeeper Courtney Jones (Panama City, Fla./Bay HS), forward Dernelle Mascall (Basse Terre, Moruga, Trinidad/Mobile), and midfielder Anastasia Prescott (Morvant, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad/Mobile) were the UWF representatives, and all three are coming off All-GSC selections in 2007.

The Argos also had four players named on the 2008 Top Newcomers list. Freshmen midfielders Connie Boisseau (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln HS), Kelsey Nooney (Panama City, Fla./Rutherford HS), and Noelle Robles (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS) made the list, as well as sophomore defender Noha Saleh (Wellington, Fla./Nova Southeastern).

UWF will start the 2008 season on the road, facing non-conference opponents Flagler and Thomas. The Argos will face Flagler on Friday, August 29 at 5:00 p.m. ET and Thomas on Sunday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m. ET. Fans can follow all the action on www.GoArgos.com.
