Sierra Timmer and Ashley Dernbach sort through items for SAAC's Clothing Drive

Moraga, CA - On Friday, May 23 five Saint Mary's student-athletes spent the day collecting clothes and other used goods as students left campus for the Summer Holiday. The project was organized by next year's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) Co-President, Ashley Dernbach, who will be a junior on the women's soccer team. Assisting Ashley with the project were SAAC members Sierra Timmer - women's rowing, Keenan Flynn - men's soccer, Katherine Delpit - softball, and Megan Burton - women's volleyball.

The group spent the day sorting clothes and various other items from all residence halls on campus, before they loaded everything into a 15-passenger van and drove to San Francisco to deliver the donations. Larkin Street Youth and Goodwill of San Francisco accepted all of the donations and we're extremely pleased with the outcome of the project.

After graduation on Sunday, May 25, Ashley and Megan collected all of the donations left behind by the graduating senior class as well. These items were taken to Goodwill in Moraga.

Clothing drives on a smaller scale have been by SAAC in the past, but this year mark's the first time that all residence halls on campus have participated in the clothing donation.

While it was a lot of work for these student-athletes, they certainly felt the reward was worth the work as Ashley Dernbach stated, "If we didn't do organize this clothing drive, all of the items we donated would have just been thrown away. As a committee we really wanted to make a difference by helping those less fortunate and thought the clothing drive was a great way to not only provide assistance to organizations that need it, but to also help cut down on the amount of waste on campus. This has been a very rewarding experience and we look forward to organizing it again next year."
