Women's Soccer Takes to the Road for Spring Season Matches

Colonials Conclude Schedule at Home Against American on Friday

GW women's soccer is 2-2-1 in their Spring Season

April 17, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's soccer has opened their 2008 spring season with a 2-2-1 mark in five matches, all played on the road. GW will complete their schedule tomorrow, April 18, with a home match against American, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Mount Vernon.

The Colonials began spring play on Friday, Mar. 28, with a 4-0 win over Towson. GW had been training together since mid-January, and it was evident that they were ready to compete against another team. Three rising-seniors scored the four goals on the day. Forward Meg Pyle opened the scoring in the first half with a blast from the left side into the upper 90. Soon after, Keara Mehlert put away her first goal of the spring season. The scoring continued as Kerry Philbin drove the end line and smashed the ball past the keeper. The final goal of the afternoon came off a great long ball by Lauren Kelly, headed on by Erica Wright and then finished by Meg Pyle.

Just two days later, the Colonials took the field against Atlantic Coast Conference member Maryland. The game was even until the final 25-minutes, when Kerry Philbin flicked a long throw by Liz Hillin onto Misa Eiritz, who settled it and lofted a shot past the Terrapins' goalkeeper. GW held the lead until the final seven minutes, when Maryland came back to score two, including the game winner with just 26 seconds remaining in the match.

On April 6, GW was back in action, taking on both George Mason and Virginia Tech at Georgetown. In two, one-hour matches, GW battled to a 1-0 victory against George Mason, and then fell to the Hokies, 1-0.

Head Coach Tanya Vogel was extremely pleased with her team's efforts against traditionally strong programs. "It was a great test against a team they will see again in the fall, as GW travels to Blacksburg, VA, to compete against two strong ACC programs, in Wake Forest and Virginia Tech." This past weekend, GW took to the road again, where they took on James Madison in Harrisonburg, VA. The match was back and forth, but in the end, neither team was able to score.

Strong goalkeeping from rising-sophomore Molly Jensen, along with outstanding defensive organization led by Christy Mazzola and Jillian Morgan, have stymied attacks this spring. In five matches, the GW defense has allowed just three goals while registering three shutouts.

The women complete their spring season schedule this Friday, April 18th at home against American. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m., at the Mount Vernon Soccer field.
