Women's Lacrosse Announces Freshman Class

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Marist Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Noelle Cebron announced her complete freshman class this afternoon. The class of 2009 consists of 15 talented freshmen who will bring talent and energy to the program. Coach Cebron has brought in student-athletes from five different states including California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

"This incoming class will be a tremendous asset to our program and I am fortunate to be coaching this team," said Cebron. "I feel that they compliment the talent we currently have on the squad, bringing depth, versatility and sheer athleticism to our program. With the combination of veterans and newcomers now playing for Marist, we are looking forward to a successful spring."

Five New York natives will be playing in their home state this spring. Kyle Jansky (Bethpage, N.Y.) is a 5-6 goalkeeper who earned All-County, All-Conference and Team MVP honors after leading her Bethpage High School team to Conference Championship her senior year. A four-year scholar-athlete, Jansky served as team captain of both the lacrosse and soccer teams and was also an All-Conference soccer player. Also from Long Island is defener/midfielder Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) who earned All-County honors her junior and senior seasons. She also played on the New York National Team Two, earning a silver medal and was named a Lacrosse Academic All-American in 2005. Megan White (Copiague, N.Y.) is an attack/midfielder who was named All League as a sophomore, junior, and senior and led her Holy Trinity High School team to the CHSAA Championships in 2004. She was also a Lacrosse Academic All-American her senior year.
 

 

Four-time All League and All Selection honoree Megan Frey (Pearl River, N.Y.) led her Nanuet High team to the Final Four for two consecutive seasons. A 2005 All-County selection, Frey totaled 253 career points, breaking the school record in career assists with 102. Rounding out the New York natives is Ashley Datellas (Camillus, N.Y.), a 5-5 defender who was a member of the 2005 Class A Division Co-Championship team. She earned All-League Honorable Mention and was named a Lacrosse Academic All American as a senior.

Four of the new Red Foxes come to Poughkeepsie from lacrosse hotbed Maryland. Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) was an Honorable Mention All-American midfielder in 2005. The two-time First Team All-County, All-Journal and All-Gazette player was twice voted Team MVP at Sherwood High School. Midfielder Nicole Goge (Westminister, Md.) earned Second Team All County, First Team All Conference and Lacrosse Academic All-American honors while at Winters Mill High School. She played on the Mid-Atlantic National Team and was a First Team All-County and All-Conference soccer player.

A 5-7 attack, Peak Rainy (Columbia, Md.) earned Most Valuable Attack Player in 2004 and earned All-County Honors as a junior and senior at Hammond High School. She received the Coaches Award as a sophomore and was an honor roll student who also played field hockey. 5-10 defender Caitlin Schuch (Columbia, Md.) was a member of 17th Nationally Ranked Seton Keough High School Team. She helped lead her team to the Independent Athletic Association of Maryland Conference Championships and was a Lacrosse Academic All-American.

Three of the newcomers hail from Massachusetts, including a pair of teammates from Needham High School. Defender/midfielder Jodi Brown (Needham, Mass.) helped her team to the Massachusetts State Championships in 2002 and 2003. She was also the captain and MVP of the 2004 State Championship field hockey team. Her former Needham High teammate Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) was also a member of the 2002 and 2003 State Championship teams. A threat at attack and midfield, Noftsker was a First Team Bay State League All-Star junior and senior years and Emass All-Star in 2005. Defender Jesse Viamari (Longmeadow, Mass.) led her Longmeadow High team to the 2004 Massachusetts State Championship and to Western Mass. Championships all four years of her career. She was named First team All-Western Mass. and First Team All-League as a junior and senior and was on the Massachusetts Super 60 All-Star team.

A pair of New Jersey players rounds out the east coast freshmen. Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) was a First team All-Area and First Team All-Conference attack at West Morris Central She had 89 goals and 40 assists for her career and also helped lead her STEPS Club team to a third place finish in the National Draw Tournament. Jennifer Franz (Toms River, N.J.) is a 5-5 defender who played four seasons of lacrosse at Monsignor Donovan. She also led her cross-country team to the B South Champions all four years.

5-7 midfielder Julia Schelkun (Coronado, Calif.) is the only player on the roster from the Golden State. A 2005 All-American, Schelkun was earned First Team All-League honors her junior and senior years and Second Team All-League as a sophomore. She was named City Player of the Year in and led her team to second place finish in the CIF in 2005.

The Red Foxes return 13 players from last year's MAAC Tournament squad and the freshman class is expected to make an immediate impact. Marist has already competed in Hofstra's fall tournament and had a solid showing.
