Women's Lacrosse Hosts Penn Saturday in home opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (0-2 overall, 0-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women's lacrosse squad will host Penn (1-0), Saturday at 1 p.m. in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Last week the Buckeyes lost, 17-9, at Stanford and 12-11, at California. A LOOK AT OHIO STATE

The head coach for the Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State opened the season last week with two losses. The Buckeye fell 17-9 at Stanford and 12-11 at California. KC Carter (Sr., Birchrunville, Pa.) leads the team in points with nine with a team-high eight goals and an assist. Kristen Slahor (So., Ellicott City, Md.) is second in points with five with two goals and a team-high three assists. Jessica Patane (So., Farmingdale, N.Y.) has four points with two goals and two assists. Kendall Gysin (Fr., Noblesville, Ind.), Alicia Meredith (Sr., Prospect, Ky.) and Kim Hastings (Sr., Sewickley, Pa.) share team-high honors with three ground balls each. Carter has a team-high six draw controls with Kendall Gysin (Fr., Noblesville, Ind.) second with four. In goal, Hastings started both matches in California and has a 14.50 goals against average while recording a .500 saves percentage.

A LOOK AT PENN

The Quakers are coached by Karin Bower. Penn opened the season with a 14-3 home victory over Monmouth last week. They host Temple Wednesday prior to facing Ohio State Saturday. Allison Ambrozy and Melissa Lehman share team-high honors with four points. They share team-high honors with three goals each. Emily Cochran and Ali Ryan have three points. Cochran has a goal and two assists while Ryan has two goals and an assist. Karen Jann leads the team with two ground balls while she and Cochran, Sarah Eastburn and Ambrozy share team-high honors with two draw controls each. Ambrozy leads the team with three caused turnovers. In goal, Karrie Moore had the win over Monmouth, playing 30 minutes, giving up two goals and recording four saves. Sarah Waxman played 30 minutes giving up a goal while making six saves.
 

 

OHIO STATE - PENN SERIES

Penn won the only meeting against Ohio State in 2005, 8-7, in two overtimes, in Philadelphia. Kelly Kremer had three goals for OSU. The Buckeyes trailed 6-4 when goals by Kremer (43:57) and Regina Oliver (55:52) tied the game at six and send it into overtime. Kremer's third goal gave OSU a 7-6 lead but Penn countered with a goal 20 seconds later by Allison Ambrozy (64:55) to tie the game at seven. Penn, on a goal by Ali Ryan (69:39), scored 39 seconds into the second overtime to take the win. Kristen Slahor, Lindsay Weiner and Ashley Evans complete the scoring for OSU. Oliver had a team-high seven ground balls in the game with a draw control and a caused turnover.

CARTER HAS BACK-TO-BACK FOUR GOAL GAMES

KC Carter scored four goals in each game last weekend in California. She had four goals against Stanford, adding five draw controls and a caused turnover. At California, Carter had four goals and an assist, adding a draw control and a ground ball. Her two-four goal performances ties her career high set against Johns Hopkins in 2005. Her five draw controls at Stanford is a career-high. She twice recorded four draw controls, the last at Duke in 2003. Carter now ranks 12 in career points for Ohio State with 67, is 11th in career goals with 53 and 14th in caused turnovers with 40..

SLAHOR MOVES TO 10TH IN OHIO STATE CAREER ASSISTS

Kristen Slahor recorded an assist at Stanford and two at California to raise her career total to 23 and move into 10th place on the Ohio State career list. She passed Lorena Opitz (1996-98) with 23. Slahor added a ground ball and a caused turnover at Stanford and had two goals at California, adding a ground ball.

PATANE POSTS CAREER-HIGH THREE POINTS AT STANFORD

Jessica Patane scored a goal and added two assists at Stanford to post a new career high of three points in the contest. Her previous high was two, set at Davidson in 2005 with two goals. Patane's goal against the Cardinal came on a free position shot. She scored a goal at California to record four points on the weekend, standing third on the team in points with four.

SHIMP SCORES TWICE AGAINST STANFORD

Amanda Shimp (So., Endicott, N.Y.) scored the first goals of her career at Stanford Friday. She added a ground ball, draw control and a caused turnover in the contest. Shimp recorded two draw controls and a ground ball at California to complete the weekend.

HASTINGS RANKS THIRD IN CAREER WINS FOR THE BUCKEYES With 11 victories on the last four years, Kim Hastings ranks third all-time in career wins for the Buckeyes. She had five wins (5-9) in 2004 and six (6-10) in 2005. She is 11-22 in her career. Hastings stands third in OSU career saves with 250 and is fifth in career goals against average at 9.93. She had a career-high 16 saves at California.

MILLER NOW TIED FOR 12TH IN OSU CAREER DRAW CONTROLS

Natale Miller (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) has 32 career draw controls and is now tied for 12th on the OSU career list. She is now tied with Trish Derwart (1999-02). Miller recorded a draw control in the Stanford game and added a goal and a ground ball at California.

KREMER NAMED TO 2006 ALC PRESEASON TEAM

Kelly Kremer (So., Kennett Square, Pa.) has been named to the 2006 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason Team by a vote of the league coaches. In her freshman season with the Buckeyes, she was named the ALC Rookie of the Year and a second team ALC selection. Kremer started all 16 games last season, recording team-highs of 38 goals and 44 points, adding six assists, 22 ground ball, 17 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers. She was named to the 2005 National All-Rookie Team by womenslacrosse.com. OHIO STATE PICKED FIFTH IN THE ALC

Ohio State was picked to finish fifth in the conference by a vote of the league coaches. NCAA and ALC defending champion Northwestern was tabbed to win the conference, received 36 votes and all six first place ballots. Penn State, with 27 votes, was picked to finish second, one point ahead of third place John Hopkins with 26. Vanderbilt was selected to finish fourth with 19 votes, Ohio State fifth with 10 votes and Ohio sixth with 8 votes.

HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel

Sue Stimmel is in her 11th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women's lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to OSU. Stimmel is 79-73 at Ohio State (10 years) and is 155-91 in her 16-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school's second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.

REVIEWING THE STANFORD GAME

Ohio State (0-1 overall) fell to Stanford (2-1), 17-9, in the season opener for the Buckeyes. OSU's KC Carter scored a team-high four goals with Amanda Shimp adding two. Stanford's Megan Burker and Michelle DeChant scored five goals each for the Cardinal.

Ohio State opened the game with a 2-0 lead, scoring just 35 seconds into the contest on a free position goal by Kendall Gysin. Carter made it 2-0 with a goal assisted by Jessica Patane at 1:35. DeChant scored Stanford's first goal at 2:16 on an assist by Megan McClain. At 4:06 into the game, Ohio State took a 3-1 lead on Carter's second goal, assisted again by Patane. Stanford then scored seven consecutive goals to take an 8-3 lead. The Buckeyes made it 8-4 at 19:57 with an unassisted goal by Shimp. Stanford would score two more times in the half to take a 10-4 lead at the break.

Cardinal Elizabeth Fries opened the scoring in the second half at 30:46 with an unassisted goal. OSU responded with an unassisted goal by Shimp at 27:14. Liz Piselli made the score, 12-5 with a goal at 34:33. Carter responded at 37:53 with a goal assisted by Kristen Slahor to cut the lead to six at 12-6. Stanford scored five of the next six goals with OSU's Carter scoring a free position goal at 43:40. The Buckeyes would add late free position goals by Patane (56:31) and Lindsay Weiner (59:03) to close out the scoring in the 17-9 Stanford victory.

In goal for Ohio State, Kim Hastings had 13 saves in the loss while giving up 17 goals in playing the entire game. Stanford's Laura Shane picked up the win, playing 56:31, recording five saves and giving up eight goals. Kate Horowitz closed out the final 3:29 for the Cardinal, allowing one goal while recording two saves.

REVIEWING THE CALIFORNIA GAME

Ohio State (0-2 overall) dropped a 12-11 decision at California (2-1) Sunday. The Buckeyes fell behind early, trailing, 6-0 and were down, 9-3 at the half. Trailing, 12-7, with seven minutes remaining, OSU scored four goals to climb within one at 12-11, the last goal with seven seconds remaining in the game. OSU's KC Carter scored a team-high four goals in the contest with Kristen Slahor adding two. Danni Zuralow of California had a team-high three goals for the Bears with Liz Reifsnyder and Jocelyn Paul adding two each.

California opened the scoring with three consecutive goals by Zuralow at 0:52, 5:10 and 16:29 gone in the game. Her first two goals were unassisted and the third was a free position shot. Bear goals by Schuyler Sokolow (17:11), assisted by Sam Price, Reifsnyder (18:25) on a free position shot and Cristen Andrews (18:54) gave California a 6-0 lead. OSU's Kendall Gysin put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard with a goal at 23:49. California took the lead to 8-1 with scores from Laura Cavallo (24:46) and Jocelyn Paul (25:27). Ohio State closed out the scoring in the half with a Kelly Kremer goal at 25:40, assisted by Kristen Hannon and a score by Jessica Patane at 26:42, assisted by Slahor to end the half at 8-3, California.

California took a 9-3 lead at 33:02 of the second half. OSU's Natale Miller scored at 35:21 on an assist from Carter. Price made it 10-4 at 38:58 with an assist by Reifsnyder. The Buckeyes responded at 41:40 with a Carter goal, assisted by Kelyn Laws and a Slahor free position goal at 43:01 to cut the Bear lead to four at 10-6. California took the lead to five with a goal by Paul, assisted by Reifsnyder at 47:38. OSU's Carter scored unassisted at 52:12 to make it 11-7. Bear Madeleine Dale scored the game winning goal on a free position shot at 52:59 to lead, 12-7. The Buckeyes rallied to close within one with four consecutive goals. Slahor at 53:32 and Carter at 53:42 scored unassisted goals to cut the lead to 12-9. Bethany Carey , with an assist from Slahor scored at 57:29 to trail by two. Carter, with her fourth goal of the game, unassisted, cut the Bear lead to one at 59:53 for the final, 12-11 California win.

In goal for California, Hilary Lynch picked up the win, making nine saves while giving up 11 goals. Buckeye Kim Hastings took the loss, making 16 saves, yielding 12 goals.
