Washington, D.C. - Georgetown's women's lacrosse program opens the 2006 season at Mt. St. Mary's this Sunday. Start time is slated for 1 p.m. This will be the second straight season Georgetown will begin the year against the Mount.
The Hoyas carry a #10 preseason ranking into Emmitsburg, Maryland. It is Head Coach Ricky Fried's second year at the helm after leading GU to a 13-5 record and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals in his first season. The Hoyas have won their last 12 season opening games, including last year's 18-3 triumph against MSM. All-time the Hoyas are 15-14 in season openers.
The Series with the Mount... Georgetown has won all five previous meetings against Mt. St. Mary's, including last season's 18-3 season opening win in Washington. Last year's game reunited the two squads who prior to that had not faced each other since 1988.
Some Tidbits on the Hoyas...
Georgetown was selected to win the 2006 BIG EAST Conference as voted on by the league coaches...Junior Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep)was named 2006 BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while junior Chloe Asselin (Talloires, France/Edgemont)was selected as BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and senior defender Stephanie Zodtner (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team...The Women's Selection Committee for the 2006 Tewaaraton Trophy named Stanwick and Laura Cipro (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) to the preseason "watch list"...In Lacrosse Magazine and the IWLCA 2006 preseason polls, the Hoyas were chosen 10th while Inside Lacrosse picked the Hoyas 12th...Stanwick scored two or more goals in 16 of GU's 18 games last year...Georgetown's two captains are junior Stanwick and senior defender Zodtner...GU graduated six of its top 10 goal scorers from last year...The Hoyas will face one of the most difficult regular season schedules in the country taking on seven of the nine teams ranked ahead of them in the Preseason Lacrosse Magazine poll...For the second consecutive season Georgetown will take to the West Coast, this year facing Oregon next Sunday, March 5.
