CANTON, N.Y. (www.stlawu.edu/athletics) - The No.1 St. Lawrence Women's Hockey team (12-0-2, 3-0-2) defeated No.8 Clarkson 3-1 in front of a record crowd Wednesday night in ECAC Hockey League play. The Saints extended their school record unbeaten streak to 15 games in front of 2,136 fans at Appleton Arena. The previous record of 1,127 was established on Dec. 15, 2000 when the Saint women hosted Team USA.
The Golden Knights grabbed the momentum when they scored at 10:27 in the first period. Amidst a scrum in front of the Saints net, it took three tries before Emma Madigan was able to get the puck past Jessica Moffat.
It took nearly 20 minutes, but the Saints answered at 8:48 in the second, capitalizing on a Clarkson penalty. Junior Crystal Connors pulled in a pass from freshman Alison Domenico in the corner. She skated into the Clarkson net, and while falling to the ice, snuck the puck between the post and Kira Hurley's pads.
St. Lawrence came out flying in the third period and cashed in at 8:28 to take a 2-1 lead. Domenico wristed a shot from the high slot that beat Hurley for her sixth of the season. Seniors Emilie Berlinguette and Laurie Ross assisted on the goal.
Freshman Marianna Locke scored just under two minutes later to give the Saints a 3-1 cushion. With St. Lawrence on the power play thanks to a Clarkson penalty for too many on the ice, the Saints went to work. Sophomore Annie Guay rifled a shot from the point that Hurley closed the five-hole on. But the puck ricocheted out to Locke in the slot, who buried it in the back of the Clarkson net.
Shots on net were low for two teams that averaged over 30 shots a game. The Saints held the advantage 20-14 over the Knights. St. Lawrence went 2-of-6 on the power play and 4-of-4 on the penalty kill. Moffat finished with 13 saves in her ninth win of the season. Hurley made 17 saves to fall to 10-4-1 on the season.
